Summary

There’s a lot going on along Gertrude St, so when opening a new venue you’d want to offer something pretty great. Not having sampled everything, we can’t comment on that, but there is choice. And it’s available (almost) all day. Behind the people pleasing operation is Anthony Brem, owner of Collingwood’s famed Bluebird Espresso. So he knows what works for the area and what doesn’t. That’s why you probably find such a large selection of feel good food, alcoholic beverages and gourmet sans-gluten dishes. It feels pretty laid back in there. There are sultry paintings on the walls with plenty of booth action, as well as some outdoor space for the smokers and friends of smokers who like them enough to withstand the bitter ice that is a Melbourne morning. To keep you warm though, you can grab a coffee with some Za’atar eggs that come with chickpea chips, burnt eggplant, sumac yoghurt and pomegranate or, just wait ’til 10am and you’ll get in on the burger. It’s just the second Juicy Lucy we’ve seen in Melbourne, so this was the only thing we had on our minds when ordering. The burger comes out on a brioche bun with a Wagyu patty stuffed with Jalapeno spiked Monterrey Jack, mustard, ketchup, pickles, iceberg lettuce and fries.

“I’ve had a few Juicy Lucys now, some here, some in the USA. And, I think there’s definitely a level of gimmick to it all. But that doesn’t mean I don’t get sucked in. Oozy cheese? What could be better? In Archie’s burger, the patty/patties did well to keep the cheese from spilling out all over the place. What surprised me most was how much more punch the Jalapeno Jack had. It was “Tame” on a scale of “Nothing to Pass Me the Milk”, but there was still a nice tingle with each bite. With all the effort going into sealing the patty and cheese, the patty became a little over cooked. I was looking for a soft pinky juiciness to be there. It was still a tasty patty . But just a little too far charred. I’m a real fan of pickles but there was a little too much here. For this, I’d liked to have seen a pickle on the side. So your experience goes something like: take a bite, grab some chips, and then take another bite of some juicy sweet pickles for some zest. I didn’t mind this thing and I do give credit for trying something not so everyday.”

Summary

It was once a KFC and then turned into an Indian restaurant, but now, sitting almost lonesome on the side of Burwood Hwy is On It Burgers. All the tell tale signs from the Finger Lickin’ Good days are still there. So it’s even cooler that inside is a pretty cool, craft beer loving, burger slinging restaurant. They opened in late 2014 to much local fanfare but the buzz has has worn off a bit and now you won’t be left elbowing people away for a table. They pride themselves on their premium Grass Fed beef burgers, with 9 on offer there’s more than enough to keep you wanting to come back again. Same goes for the fries and shakes. Pick anything from Truffle & Parmesan fries to a Toasted Marshmallow milk shake. But there’s a dozen more options. I was tempted by The Luke burger that comes with bacon jam and a black bun (maybe next time) but went for their names sake, the On It Burger. On an Artisan Bun it comes with a Grass Fed Beef Patty, American cheese, Smokey On It Sauce, lettuce, red onion, tomato and pickles.

Comments
“It seemed like a “nothing much” kind of place. As I drove toward it, it sent me straight to the memory road-trip pitstops, where you’re dying for a leak and whatever deep fried food is on offer. But this had a smidge more class. The fact that I didn’t walk through an automatic door helped this, but then I saw the craft beers on display and almost pool hall like decor. There were some decent choices on the menu, but I had to go with the namesake. Accompanied by a crisp beer and some parmesan truffle fries it sat there alone on a wooden board. I figured it was going to be that or a basket anyhow. But, I really like the bun. Apart from there being maybe a bit too much of it, it was really nice. It was fluffy but then with a nice glazed exterior that held in all that signature sauce. Which, I might add, was delicious. It was smokey, creamy and slightly spicy. Imagine a more complex, less sweet chipotle mayo. It mixed really nice with the fatty, meaty patty. I just wish there was a bit more of to go around because I was left with just bun and sauce at the end. I thought this was a really nice burger. It had a signature to it and it left me wanting more. But I think in a good way. I’d go back if I was ever in the mood for a road-trip down South. But I might opt for a Double Classic option just with added On it Sauce.”
