Summary

Mentone’s little hub has a lot going for it. The locals can get themselves into a decent cafe for brunch, or get themselves into town with the train station front and centre. Nowadays, thanks to Burger Lab, the locals can get themselves a decent looking burger too. The guys behind the operation are Anthony Pinzone and Chef Lochie Greig-Moore who are all about a relaxed environment with organic, sustainable produce. There’s a clear sense of “chill” throughout the place, with friendly staff, plenty of beer on tap as well as local specials for students to come and bitch about their Maths teacher. Their burger list isn’t as scientific – as was expected – from their name and branding, but instead they’re pretty classic options. The craziest they go is with their prawn burger that has a squid ink, black bun. But we’d never go down that path. To make up for that silliness they also offer chicken wings and ribs. I chose to sink my teeth into a Free-Range Bacon Burger that came on a seeded brioche bun with a beef patty, ‘Hagens’ Free-Range Bacon, melted organic Raclette cheese, tomato sauce, lettuce, tomato, diced shallot and mayo.

Comments
“This was big. I saw a tonne of mayo, which normally I’m cool with. But it got me a little worried about how creamy and messy this would get. I bit in and it happened – a whole lot of slide. I almost lost my tomato instantly. But, to make up for it, there was a nice salty creaminess going on. The cheese, bacon, beef and mayo thing was working for me. Then I lost the lettuce. It was half out anyway so I gave it a shove. The beef was pink and juicy and the tomatoes were really fresh and sweet. The downfall to this thing was the bun. There was already a lot of sweetness going on so the brioche was overkill. Plus as I mentioned, it was on the big side. Less bun, more fun.”

Summary

The only way this place could be more Melbourne would-be if it were hidden down a laneway. Close enough though, it’s off the main drag off Smith street, and instead of hiding themselves they’ve thrown actual train carriages on their roof. Actually a really smart but probably expensive move. With Melbourne having more burger joints than ever, the kids refer to Easey’s as “the one with the trains”. A product of fellow burger lover Jimmy “Burgers” Hurlston and local artist Jeremy Gaschk this joint doesn’t do things by halves. They’re an experimental bunch. The anything goes attitude is seen across a lot of their social media and clienteles choices. Want a DimSim in your burger? Sure. How about 12 patties. Why not? This “Easy-going” bunch sees locals constantly trying to outdo each other with more melt, more patty and more absurdity. I sat downstairs, enjoyed some beer and went for a more classic option. The boys brought me a Too Ease that came on a soft bun, with two beef patties, double American cheddar, pickles, onion, ketchup, mustard and without realising it, somehow I’d managed to add some bacon in there.

Comments
“I’d heard mixed reviews about Easey’s ever since they opened. But, for me this was pretty damn decent. The patties were pink and spot on, and the streaky bacon cut into strips meant that I didn’t pull out all the bacon within my first bite. I was a big fan of how soft and easy to eat this was too. It was salty, simple and to the point. Oh, and supremely cheesy. I’m not really a fan of the the whole, “the bigger the better” culture that’s brewing at certain venues like this. But, if the kids that visit want to splash cash for internet points, please be my guest. All I can liken them to people who drive Hummers. Overall, the burgers impressed, so that’s most important. P.s God bless their souls, they take bookings.”

Summary

You wouldn’t expect this kind of place in between the factories and apartments behind Chapel Street. It’s actually been there quite a while disguised as Tryst Bar, where many Melbournians have enjoyed a drink or two. Now, as the brother venue of local watering hole Sweet Water Inn, Leanord’s House of Love is does both drinks and killer food. Their menu has been setup by Chef Nick Stanton who’s worked his magic at Woods of Windsor and Nieuw Amsterdam. It’s a pretty straight up and down kind of thing. Basically, some decent drinking food that’s going to keep you in the hunting lodge-style cottage for quite a while. You can help yourself to some fried chicken, charcoal chicken, chicken fries, a few salads and then a couple of burgers. It can get pretty hectic in there on weekend so be aware, you might find yourself sitting outside. Which is fine when it starts warming up, but Melbourne can be a bit of a bitch, so either take a coat or be prepared to be fitted for a beer jacket. Lucky for us we were inside and decided to go for their signature Cheeseburger that came on a brioche bun with a beef brisket + short rib patty, special sauce, cheese, onion and lettuce.

Comments
“Yep! “Grease me up“. That shiny bun made for a great site. It also somehow made the first chomp so much softer than I expected. This was a creamy, salty delight. The patty was pink, juicy and together with the salty pickles and sauce reminded me of a high-class fast food restaurant. But none of the “create your taste” ilk. I really dig this burger. It made me want a double. Because basically, you could eat this for lunch and then go for a jog. It was surprisingly light. Not that I was hungry after it all (even with some chips), but I just felt nice, warm and totally loved.”
