Summary

Along the beachy, somewhat fancier side of Melbourne, Saintly Burger sits at home in Elwood. It’s not a place too many Melbournians make a trip out too. It’s mainly filled with locals and has an almost “small town with cash” feel to the strip. Although you’ll definitely find the backpackers circling around being next door to the ever popular St Kilda foreshore. The burger joint has been around for about 10 years and has seen trends come and go. They of course pride themselves on their burgers being pure at heart serving Grass Fed beef, chemical free chicken and a few vegetarian options. They cater to young and old, especially when you consider their range of “grown up” milkshakes that come spiked with booze. Saintly’s a small shop with a large communal dining table that’s perfect pitstop after a day at the beach. Their burger mantra says that everything is better with bacon, so it was only right to add it to my choice of their super simple Double Cheese Cheeseburger. In between a low G-I Sourdough bun came a 160gm grass fed beef patty, two pieces of cheese, ketchup, pickles and mustard.

Comments
“Everything on paper sounded great: the grass fed stuff, the double cheese and the simplicity of it all. I don’t normally find places that pride themselves on this kind of basic genius. Alas, it was a bit of a mess. The patty tasted store-bought and so did the bun and not as premium as they made out to be. To “upgrade” to brioche was an extra $1 and I wasn’t having any of that. They recommend sourdough so it was sourdough ’til the end – unfortunately. The patty was chargrilled, but on the burnt side of the scale, leaving me with a tough and undesirable bite. I was excited at first because the bacon looked like it was cut straight from the slab, but there were still big bits of rind on there that had me picking at my teeth with each bite. I honestly don’t know what happened here. A burger shouldn’t be hard work. I feel like no one in the kitchen has tasted this burger. So much promise to start with but I’m afraid I’d be going back to the drawing board on this one.”
