Summary

You don’t really just stumble on a place like St Burgs. Apart from a laundromat, it’s one of the only inhabited businesses at the bottom of an apartment block in what feels like the middle of nowhere. This little pocket situated along the Maribyrnong River has spectacular city views and will some day be booming with life. But right now it has that Docklands vibe that isn’t quite right. This hasn’t stopped the burger loving guys behind St Burgs. It’s a family affair, with a bunch of brothers getting together to create a no-nonsense burger joint. Their menu consists of only a handful of burgers to match your appetite or eating disfunction: choose from a beef burger, fried chicken burger or a mushroom burger. They even do some wings if you need more than fries as a side. There’s not a whole lot of room inside but there’s a lot more space to go Al Fresco and embrace the beef sweats. We ordered the Double D that came on a milk bun with two Australian grass fed beef patties, double American cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, gherkin relish, “durger mayo” & smokey sauce.

Comments
“Some very well-seasoned, good smashed patties surrounded by oozing cheese and drenched in some sweet tasting sauce. The bun started out OK, but by end became a sloppy mess. Would I go back? Hells yeah! Big tip: when you’re sitting outside be sure to use a plate when eating as I guarantee you the burger will drop through the table gaps and go all over your new kicks. Fries were good.”
“This was good. It dripped goodness. Everywhere. I was hungover and it was just what I needed. The patties were salty and had a bit of crunch to each bite. But the biggest bonus to this burger was the soft gooeyness that left cheese stuck to all my teeth. The only this I just wasn’t sure on the BBQ sauce. It mixed with the pickle relish they had going on and made for a burger that was just a touch too much the sweet side for me. Next time I might just hold the BBQ sauce. If you’re in need of a burger hug, St Burgs will answer your prayers.”

Summary

The man behind the famed Beatbox Kitchen, Taco Truck and All Day Donuts brings Melbourne another stellar eatery. It’s called Juanita Peaches and it’s a little bit of East L.A in Brunswick. For the last couple of months it’s been mainly a fried chicken joint, but there’s a Cheese Burger on the menu now that should get peoples’ attention. Why wasn’t it on the menu from the get-go? It just wasn’t ready yet. Raph Rashid has been perfecting this burger for the last 5 years. He wanted to create a cheese burger that you’d keep coming back to, something you don’t feel like you need a python-like jaw to eat, something with the perfect balance of bread to meat. One of the things that took the longest to craft was the bun. Raph calls it a Boogie Bun, and it’s like a potato bun made love to a brioche – solid but spongey. When you order, you’ll see the guys place the buns in a giant steamer, along with the cheese on the top bun creating the signature “Up-Cheese”. He also minces his own Victoria Grass Fed beef, meaning that from top to bottom it’s all Raph’s Cheese Burger. It comes with 120gm Grass Fed beef patty, double cheese, mustard, onions, pickle all on a Boogie Bun. You can order extras like an extra patty or chilli peppers, but the chef recommends keeping it as is.

Comments
“This is a Happy Meal for adults. All of it made me feel like a kid again. The white onions, the American cheese, the mustard and of course the delicious patty. All in between a spongey, soft bun. This thing is great. It made me want more. It left me wondering, did that burger need another patty? Was I just being a fatty and thought I needed another burger because I was hungry? Was I still even hungry? I thought about it for a while and realised that, yes, I did want more. But that’s pretty much what Raph sucked me into. He was right, it’s the burger you want to go back to. It’s the kind of burger that brings back the joy of going out for a hamburger with some friends. Grab a beer, add some fries, get some fried chicken and enjoy yourself. You’re not meant to eat this and wish you could take a shower. Yes this is a simple, classic Cheeseburger, but it’s also first-class.

Summary

Frozen yoghurt and burgers aren’t generally something you’d ever link. But with these two being some of the biggest food trends to hit Melbourne over the last couple of years, it isn’t a surprise that there’s now a place you can get them at the same place. YOMG (Yo My Goodness) started out in 2013 as a funky little fro-yo joint in Mordialloc. Knowing they were onto a good thing, with the place packed with sugar crazed Tweens and anxious First-Daters they’ve now spread to six locations, even as far as Cairns. But their fro-yo store in Glen Waverley has a difference: it’s a burger joint too. There’s a lot on offer with eleven burgers on the menu that go from your standard cheeseburger to the vego-friendly potato cake burger. Enjoy your fries five different ways from classic to smothered in pulled pork or opt in for a shake done old school or fancy-like. It’s hard to get a seat in there most nights but I patiently stalked three tables simultaneously waiting for a chance to eat my burger in a civilised manner. Of course, when my buzzer started to vibrate I went up and grabbed the Yo My with Cheese that came on a glazed sesame seed bun with a Grass Fed Angus patty, cheese, lettuce, tomato, ketchup and secret sauce.

Comments
“What the hell was I in for? Having been a little anti on the Fro-Yo Movement (seriously just get some ice cream people) I really wasn’t sure how a burger was ever going to be good here. But, with delightful surprise, it was great. A lot of what they did with it reminded me of Raph’s Beatbox creation, but with a mean dill/tangy sauce thing going on. It was really well balanced – a beefy patty with hints of creaminess from the American cheese to the sweetness in the tomato and ketchup. It’s busy as all hell but actually worth it. The other nice thing is that it feels like they really put their burgers first, leaving all that fro-yo nonsense at the back of the shop where it belongs.”

Summary

By day the place calls itself 5 Points Deli, where the pastrami sandwiches are thick just like the pickles. By night the theme moves away from NYC and focuses more on the Southern way of life, a little similar their sister venue Le Bon Ton. They’ve got that vibe going too. It’s a big old brick building with a heap of seats, low lighting and high quality cocktails. You’ll also notice a real crossover of menus between the Balleau brothers venues with crowd favourites peppered throughout. Here at Longhorn you’ll find the Burger Adventure awarded Le Bon Ton Cheeseburger as well 5 Points Deli’s famous Reuben. They’ve also got some serious steaks on the menu as well as the drool worthy Chicken and Waffles. What piqued my curiosity was the Ranchero burger that came on a glazed bun with a Wagyu beef patty, Ranchero sauce, onion rings, American Cheese and tangy mayo.

Comments
“I’d had my eye on this for a while. I wasn’t exactly sure what Ranchero sauce was going to be but it had to be spicy! The burger looked great. Even if it did have the over the top onion rings. I bit in but felt no spice. It was a subdued chilli sauce with a mix of Chimmi Churri that made up that Ranchero flavouring. The patty and cheese hugged each other the whole meal but when I got a good taste of the meat on its own it was still salty and juicy. There was nothing over the top with this burger, even though it was packed to the brim with assorted goodies. It deserves a tiny round of applause because it would’ve been easy to let all those flavours turn into a mess. Maybe that’s why they didn’t have any spice? I still would’ve liked a pinch more kick with each bite though. Even maybe a Jalapeno cheddar? The Ranchero was a decent burger, but if you’ve never tried the Le Bon Ton Cheeseburger, I’d say go down that road.”
