Summary

New York has Times Square, Gold Coast has Cavill Avenue and Warsaw has Nowy Swiat. It’s the place you’ll most likely end up as a tourist roaming the streets of Poland’s capital. No one would dare call it trashy because of it’s rich history that dates back to the late 1600’s, but it is the place to find tourists ready to spend. This means you’re rather spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding where to grab a bite, a beer or a babe. Lucky for the burger inclined folk Brooklyn Burgers and Wings provides them all (except babes, you’ll have to try and sweet talk the waitresses for that). Run by ex-pat American Alan Bohinski, BB&W serves up their signature recipes until the wee hours on a weekend and proudly notes that their patties are all minced on site and that their sauces are all Alan’s secret concoctions. After ordering at the bar I took a seat out front, watched the tourists and Polaks walk by and waited for my Brooklyn BBQ burger to arrive. It was served on a sesame seed bun with a 200g beef pattie, BBQ sauce, sweet-n-spicy grilled onions, crispy bacon, Mimolette cheese, lettuce, mayo and a side of coleslaw.

“First off, I didn’t really pay attention to the burger arriving because I was too busy thinking about proposing to my Polish waitress. After that foolishness left me I was again taken aback when I saw these two hand-shaped plastic bags sitting on my wooden plate. I figured this was one saucy experience, but what was wrong with a good old fashioned hose down afterwards? My first bite left me looking like Heath Ledger from Batman: I had Brooklyn/Texas BBQ sauce everywhere. Most of the time places flood a burger with condiments like they’re trying to hide something. But after a few bites and wiping my chin I realize realised these guys weren’t. The pattie was chunky, chopped coarse and cooked with a little bit of pink in the middle for that extra bit of softness. The bacon, onions and sauce were all a real pleasure too, giving me sweet, salty and spicy flavours with every bite. Even though I was covered head to toe in sauce and I didn’t really understand how this had anything to do with Brooklyn, this whole experience was brilliant.”

When we first got wind of Ribs & Burgers we of course did a little Google search to see what they’re all about. What we uncovered is the location of their 3 venues: Neutral Bay and Star City Casino in Sydney and, one closer to home in Northcote Plaza. Surrounded by your shopping centre regulars like a post office, supermarket and takeaways, this smart, well-established restaurant seems oddly out of place. With a crazy passion for all things meat this new eatery is dressed head to toe in its Butcher’s Best. All staff wear blue and white aprons, pickles and sauces sit upon the shelves and an open kitchen all give patrons the idea that Burgers & Ribs are all about serving up some quality chow. So when they say 100% pure beef patties they mean it: no binding agents, no salt, no flavours, just beef. Obviously specialising in burgers and ribs they also offer other selections like chicken breast and salads (but why would you bother with those?). After a few minutes trying to work out which burger to order, the chef recommended the Wagyu burger that came on a kaiser-like bun with a 225g Wagyu beef pattie topped with sliced tomato, Spanish onion, pickles, onion rings, 1000 Island and BBQ sauce.

“This burger for me went over the top and unnecessarily doubled up on nearly everything: 2 types of sauces that clashed, 2 types of onion and double the amount of bread. The beef was cooked to an ideal medium with a healthy crust of char providing plenty of flavour when tasted on its own. However, it was completely lost amongst the sweetness of the BBQ and 1,000 Island-ish sauces, the crispyness of the lettuce, onion rings and spanish onions. The bun was huge and left me feeling completely stuffed by the end of it and left me desperately needing a nap. Should I visit again I would like to try one of their more simple and traditional burgers on offer.”
“The fondest memory I have of this burger is of that awesome thick, char grilled pattie. It really set a great tone for what the rest of the burger was going to taste like. In fact, the pattie tasted like it had been grilled on the same part of the grill that the ribs were cooked on. Although you got alot of the smokey grill flavour, the 1000 Island sauce added a great freshness to it all. I do believe there was a little too much Kaiser bun here and not enough off that awesome meat. The onion rings and chips were good, and had a great amount of crunch in each bite.”
“I really thought I would love this animal. I watched as I saw other burgers and ribs coming out and they looked irresistible. But, with my first bite all I could taste was disappointment. That traditional charcoal grill flavour crust was the best part of the pattie. But, there was just so much going on. I almost think if there were a softer bun and a lot less ingredients (take out the tomato, lettuce, onion and even the onion rings) it would’ve been a great burger. Seriously, just simplify this bad boy and you’d be on a winner. I’d be back, but purely to dabble in other meaty goodness.”

If its an all-in doozy of a night that you’re after, then Hog’s Breath Cafe is the place for you. Packed to the brim with hungry folk and all kinds of random paraphernalia on the walls, this place is all about “having fun and enjoying yourself”. Their menu offers everything from pasta, seafood, sandwiches and ribs, but they’re claim to fame is an 18 hour Prime Rib Steak that can be ordered before you arrive if your worried about a sell out (it happens). It all began in 1989 by a gentleman by the name of Don Algie. After spending 4 years in Florida (some may suspect most of it at a TGIF’s), he sailed to the Whit Sundays looking for the perfect spot to set up his new venture. There in Airlie Beach, Queensland, he built the very first Hog’s Breath. Amidst the calamity and noise our waitresses Knick-Knack and Juno kindly pointed out some very enticing Burger-tarian options. We opted for the Cheeseburger in Paradise that included a grilled beef pattie topped with sliced cheddar cheese, lettuce, beetroot, tomato, red onion rings and smoked BBQ sauce all on an Aussie style Damper bun. With a hefty serve of HogsTail® fries on the side, we began the pig out.

“I was a little disappointed with this burger. For somewhere that really prides itself on the quality of their steaks and ribs, I was really let down by their poor meat pattie. I was expecting something big and bursting with juices, but in the end was it was small, dry and under seasoned. The burger was however, overloaded with tomato, beetroot and lettuce which, was too much so I ended up taking most of it out. The bun was a bit dry and didn’t really feel like it was the freshest thing I’ve ever had. The fries were actually pretty good though. Also if you’re going to make a Cheeseburger, at least make it cheesy!”
“This burger actually wasn’t as bad as I expected… it also wasn’t as big as I expected. It didn’t even leave me wishing I had worn tracksuit pants to dinner like all the other patrons. The beef had little flavour to it and the cheese wasn’t melted, but for some reason the smokey BBQ sauce made up for it. I obviously removed all of the beetroot. All the waitresses reminded me of that Juno movie and the curly fries – that were awesome – brought back fond memories of Queensland holidays.”
“It came out looking like a murder victim; insides spilling out and with a knife stuck in the middle. Not a good start to say the least. After taking a few snaps I took my first bite. The meat was OK: lightly seasoned with onions but it had a very pasty, totally over processed (and store bought) texture to it. I then went on a mission to pull out the 4 enormous slices of cold beetroot inside my burger. Sure, you can debate whether or not beetroot is a good choice in a burger all you like, but no one ever needs 4 bloody slices. This thing was meant to be a “Cheeseburger in Paradise”, but sadly it felt more like a “Cheeseburger in Syria”. I’m sure these guys do some wicked ribs and steaks, but as far as burgers go, its time to go back to the drawing board.”

Well, we had to do it. Finally we did another burger franchise. With a lot of our readers telling us to get down there and give Burger Edge a go, we knew we had to do it and see first hand how they pump out their burgers. The St Kilda Rd Burger Edge is tucked away in a little nook in The Chevron apartments. It was cosy, smelt of decent burgers (always a positive) and had friendly staff. After much dispute on which burger we should eat, we decided that the dude at the counter should settle it. He recommended we go for the Meat Lover Burger that had Prime beef, short rindless bacon salami, ham, tasty cheese, salad, and BBQ sauce. We also grabbed some chips with “Mexican” seasoning salt.

“You know what, this one actually surprised me a little as I wasn’t expecting much from this place. I thought this would be just another burger franchise thats popped up over night with not much to offer. I tasted the beef pattie on its own and it was a little under seasoned, but you probably wouldn’t notice because of the spicy salami overpowering most of the burger. Overall it actually wasn’t so bad and all the ingredients came together pretty well.”
“I found this burger to be very neat and tidy. All the ingredients were in proportion to each other resulting in a decent bite, each and every bite. We did order the meat lovers so I can’t complain that there was too much meat, but jeez there is a lot of meat in this burger! The bbq sauce complimented and added an extra smokiness, which I dont usually like, but in this case worked a treat. It was only my first burger here and I believe it’s better than Grill’d.”
“This burger did nothing for me. The Salami was the most dominant flavour and probably, in a way, the highlight on what was an average burger. The pattie was dry and a little bland. We chose the white sourdough bread, which we thought was a good choice, but it turned out to be a little dry. The red onion was tasteless but the lettuce was nicely prepared and presentable. Highly recommend trying the chips with Mexican seasoning. Would I have it again?…No.”
“We didn’t have to wait too long for this one. The burgers were ready to rock’n’roll after a couple minutes – which is something I’m always suss on. Anyhow, at that moment my hunger was telling my tastebuds to shutup and just go with it. As soon as I bit in I was hit with an abundant amount of meatiness. But really the main flavour was coming from the spicy salami. The beef pattie should’ve been the hero, but it didn’t stand a chance as it was dry and bland. The positives included the cheese, salami and lettuce, but thats like telling a girl she has nice elbows. For me this place has no real concept, like its not being run by real burger lovers. It feels more like someone with a load of cash tried to jump in on a trend just to make a few bucks. Contrary to D, for me Grill’d still rules the roost amongst the franchises. Well, at least for now…”

Summary

Some years ago whilst studying in Mexico, this was where I would order some quesedillas and ice tea, defeated after a long night/day out. Frequented mainly by University students from the UDEM, Manhattan’s is like TGI’s with a neon twist. I tackled the Rockefeller BBQ Burger, which came with a Subway-like “parmesan on top” bun, onion rings, bacon, BBQ sauce, Cheddar and Monterey Jack, and a side of jalapenos, all accompanied by thick-cut steak fries.

“My first thought was, “What is this on top of the bun!” Supposedly it was cheese. The first few bites were average and the beef wasn’t standing out from the ingredients the way I was hoping it would. All I could really taste was just BBQ sauce and a bit of crunch. The bacon and onion rings added a subtle saltiness, and as for the chips, I would have preferred shoestring fries. Then I decided to add the jalapenos! It was incredible. These spicy little bastards ran riot, and took what at first seemed an average burger, and turned it into something special.
I don’t know how, but they ended up cutting all of the flavours apart. I could finally taste the beef, (which wasn’t profoundly excellent), but it still somehow took a step up! My first “a la Mexico” burger, and it was pretty damn good.”

Summary

Boasting 14 restaurants around the world and located near the foot of Melbourne’s tallest building (Eureka Tower), Meat & Wine Co promises big things. This multi-level, contemporary take on a steak-house attracts many families and couples looking to satisfy their inner carnivore. Our burger came on a seeded bun, with a 200g Angus beef pattie, baby cos lettuce, tomato, Spanish onion, Bbq and 1000 Island sauces, and a helping of chips and onion rings.

“I can confidently say I was expecting more from a place with such a reputation. I found that it really lacked any unique flavours that would make me order seconds. It just seemed a little too “production line”. I was most unimpressed with the bun. It looked like a precut supermarket special. Although with some prompting, they will cook your pattie to your desired temperature. We asked for medium-rare.”
“This burger reminded me of something you might find at an Applebees or Bubba Gump in the States. The beef was dry, the bun was dry and I couldn’t taste either of the two sauces. If I go again I’ll have it with cheese. The onion rings were great though. I’d say its the type of place bogans go to for a fancy night in the city.”
“By looking at the glazed ribs served on the table next to us I was expecting something a little bit better than what we got. The sauce in the burger reminded me of what you would often get in a Whopper. The bun was nothing special, the pattie was dry and unevenly cooked. Overall lets just say I preferred the chips.”
“You won’t leave Meat & Wine Co hungry. Maybe a little disappointed with your Classic Burger, but not hungry. For a small price, they do have a large selection of sauces that you can add to your burger, including Vodka & Blue Cheese, which we ordered on the side. I say go crazy: add sauce, add cheese, the works… because this burger needs all the help it can get.”
