Summary

Yellow Bird is an eclectic restaurant/cafe/bar that attracts all walks of life. From the fixie riding hipsters, struggling writers, artists and musicians, people with beards, people with pug dogs, fashionistas and everyone in between. Wherever you decide to sit; inside with the bird cages, vintage furniture and band posters (that are for sale) or outside, you will be in one of Melbourne’s greatest people-watching spots. Especially catering for those cats that wear sunglasses at night, the bar is open until 1am and the kitchen until 10pm. Locals wont shutup about their breakfast burritos and modern-australian take on mexican food. But as usual we had to look past them all and go for the Yellow Bird Chilli Burger that came with a spicy ground beef patty, jalapenos, tasty cheese, red onion, tomato, bacon, rocket, chutney and a side of fries.

“When I first walked in and sat down I started to think, “What sort of ill thought-out and slapped together meal am I going to get by a place exclusively staffed by groovy Chapel St hipsters!!” I was quick to find out that it was actually a pretty damn good one. It turned out to be one of probably the best versions of a chilli burger I’ve had, without trying too hard to be different. The subtle balance of the jalapeno chillies and the raisin filled chutney really work well with the thick beef pattie. The really great thing about this burger is that it packs enough of a punch to let you know your eating chilli, but not too much to let you forget you actually ordered a burger.”
“The appearance of this burger is very deceptive. As it arrived at our table it just looked like your stock standard take on the traditional burger, with a sesame seed bun, pattie, lettuce, bacon and cheese all visible to the eye. It’s only when you bite into the burger that it really comes to life; hiding under the sumptuous piece of beef are some fiery jalepenos that give a great kick once bitten but don’t linger around too much longer. Then to keep the surprises coming you are hit by the very sweet chutney with raisins that’s spread on top of the pattie. I probably would have preferred this burger just as a pure spicy burger rather than adding the contrasting sweetness of the relish. A simple dollop of ketchup would’ve done me just fine.”
“What impressed me most about this burger was the casualness of it. No it didn’t dress in baggy jeans and call me “dude”, it was just the manner in which it was presented and served on a plate – zero pretentiousness. And, for a burger served on Chapel St (aka wank central) that is saying a lot. It was a good thick pattie, the jalapeno chillies in the burger were great and the chutney worked well in balancing out the flavours. I’m normally not that crazy about raisins in my food, but they did work well in the chutney. Nice thinly cut red onion with well-prepared bacon was another plus with just the right amount of rocket leaves. I personally did have to add some ketchup to it all and yes, the fries were good.”
“I was about to pull out the iPhone and take a hipstamatic shot of the burger, until D slapped me in the face, reminded me that I use a Blackberry and we were here for business. This burger was, in one word, “good”. The chefs have kept everything relatively simple. I always enjoy a good ol’ kaiser bun and the addition of jalapenos are always welcome. The lightly seasoned ground beef patty was on the money; even with it’s coarse texture it was still very light, almost on the delicate side. Where it lost out with me was the raisin filled chutney. It was almost like too many pussies complained that it was too spicy for them and they needed to add something extra to calm down their oh-so-mortified tastebuds. Or who knows, maybe its just more added wank factor that we see more often than not. Don’t get me wrong, the chutney (as a chutney on its own) was fine. But next thing you know they’ll be adding quince paste to burgers.”

Summary

The guys that brought you venues like the Royal Saxon and The Middle Park Hotel are at it again. In a collaborative effort with architects Six Degrees and consulting chef Paul Wilson, the New Market Hotel’s famous Shnitz & Tits has been replaced with an elegance and charm only found across the Baja California. As you step past the original red brick facade, the borders between inside and outside turn to shadows and tall Oscar Niemeyer-like arches will make you feel like you’ve stepped out of StKilda and into a contemporary artwork. Alot of time and money have gone into this project, and it didn’t just stop at the renovations. The menu is rich with SoCal-Hispanic influences. Dishes like Bone Marrow Tacos and Pork Carnitas with Pineapple Salsa are perfect for diners that think they’ve had it all. After a little bit of guacomale to start off with we delved straight into the Rare breed Warialda Belted Galloway dry aged Beef Burger that came on a brioche bun with lettuce, tomato, sides of pickled cucumber, corn, capsicum, and a bowl spicy of patatas bravas.

“This is what I’d say is a true non-traditional burger that actually works.. and works damn well! Everything about this burger was well thought out: from the pickled side of assorted veggies and the rustic potatoes chunks with a chipotle style mayo, everthing really had it’s own distinct flavor. The burger itself has one of the best buns out there, and the pattie, oh that pattie! This is something that your not going to try anywhere else. The pattie is laced with paprika and really tastes like chorizo. I’d say its best enjoyed biting from your burger to your side dish, as each portion complements one another perfectly.”
“A lot of credit should be given to the Chef. He’s confidently taken some huge risks with various flavours and sides which could easily have turned into a disaster. The bun (my favourite style), held it together and trapped in all the juice and spice from the beef. In comparison to the other dishes at the Newmarket that are too small and leave you either hungry or broke, this was a fullfilling meal. At places like this staff can sometimes be a little “too important” and snobby, but we had some really friendly service from a blonde with half of her head shaved.”
“Overall a pleasant experience. Interesting décor, big menu, good service, but most importantly a burger to be proud of. The pattie was by far the star of the show. It was well seasoned with a mixed variety of spices that gave it a good zing. It was thick and cooked well, but 1 more minute on the grill and it would’ve been over done. The bun was perfect and the miscellaneous pickles that accompanied the burger were great; each with its own distinct flavour. The abnormally yellow chips/potato wedges were ok.”
“My first impression was Wow. What the hell is this? This burger was more Mexican than any of the burgers I’d eaten in Mexico. Probably because the Mexicans were trying to emulate the Americans. Saying that I was hoping it would be a touch spicier. Your first bite is filled with juice that can only be recreated by chorizo. The lettuce and tomato were basic but you end up forgetting about them because you’re too focused on this unique flavour to the beef. We were told its seasoned with paprika, garlic, onion powder and cooked with bone marrow.. but I couldn’t get past chorizo; especially with all the red/orange juices dripping out of it. A rare dining experience that every burger (and Mexican) lover should sink their teeth into.”

Summary

Driving through Northern Mexico’s scorching summer heat, it hardly seems like anyone would be ready to tackle a monster burger; but duty calls. As you pull over on a busy road into what seems like a garage, you find the chef hard at it in front of the grill. Lucky for its patrons, Maranjaz Food Inc offers dining inside a white tiled, air-conditioned room filled with plastic chairs and where the owner sits with friends watching the football (soccer) on a big plasma TV. Quite a clean and quiet environment when compared with the sweltering heat and the noise of traffic blaring outside. I ordered the Especial that came on a toasted traditional sesame seed bun, 100g of beef, tasty cheese, tomato, lettuce, onion, avocado and both ham and salami. Sauce and chillis are available on demand.

“I was so relieved once I saw that this place had an air-conditioned dining area. Summer in Mexico is not forgiving; espescially on a diet of tacos, burgers and chillis. The owner of the place brought me the burger and I was automatically impressed with the size… but that was really about it. My beef pattie was too thin and the lettuce was overloading my burger. I added some ketchup and mustard (chilli’s weren’t going to happen on that particular day) to try and punch up the flavour. Even then it still wasn’t doing anything for me. Adding both ham and salami were an interesting touch but they weren’t of great quality. The best thing about this burger was definetly the value for money.. working out to be around $3USD. If it were a cooler day, I had ordered double meat and asked to hold the lettuce this might of been Ok.”

Tucked away in Melbourne’s northern suburbs, Grill Station is the sort of take-out that you’d only need to goto twice and they’d know you on a first name basis. Sporting a humble interior with plasma tvs on the wall, the warm and friendly staff dish out a range of grilled meats, salads and both traditional and gourmet-style burgers from lunch ’til late, 6 days a week (closed Mondays). We asked for the Hot Stuff burger that came with pure beef, beetroot, pickles, tomato, red onion, hot chilli flakes, crisp cos lettuce, sweet chilli sauce and spicy relish, all on plain kaiser-style bun. For an extra $3.50 you’ll get a side of chips and a can of soft-drink (which you will need!).

“I somewhat enjoyed this burger. It had a true, rustic homemade pattie that doesn’t have your usual perfect round shape. Although the pattie was a little thin, it was cooked perfectly and had a simple but tasty seasoning. The sweet chilli sauce versus the beetroot was a great battle; one tearing up your taste buds whilst the other tried to calm them down. I could only suggest the idea of maybe adding cheese to ease the spice of the chilli and maybe also a thicker pattie to bring the flavour of the beef to the forefront.”
“I love spicy food, however when the beef is this good, I’d prefer to have the spice toned down. The lettuce, tomato and beetroot were freezing cold and hard to bite into, so I tossed them aside pretty quickly. I’m not a fan of having flour on top of buns either. The back dining room felt like a combination of sitting in an industrial fridge whilst waiting for a bus. Having said that I’d like to try the Down Under burger they offer if I return.”
“When I found out that they did chili burgers I was really keen to try it. The result was good…. safe, but good. The pattie was imperfect and uneven, which I don’t mind at all as long as its tasty, which it was. The chili factor was definitely present, but maybe a little too dominant. The ratio of beef to “greens” was close to perfect. I really liked this burger, but I didn’t love it. It was just missing something that I haven’t yet put my finger on. Maybe hoping you guys could tell me what it is? Oh yeah… fries were damn gooood.”
“Their style of pattie was certainly the highlight of the meal. The lowlight was the car ride home; a cold Melbourne night, windows down on the free-way and what sounded like an audition for the horn section of an orchestra.. Top burger though.”

Summary

Some years ago whilst studying in Mexico, this was where I would order some quesedillas and ice tea, defeated after a long night/day out. Frequented mainly by University students from the UDEM, Manhattan’s is like TGI’s with a neon twist. I tackled the Rockefeller BBQ Burger, which came with a Subway-like “parmesan on top” bun, onion rings, bacon, BBQ sauce, Cheddar and Monterey Jack, and a side of jalapenos, all accompanied by thick-cut steak fries.

“My first thought was, “What is this on top of the bun!” Supposedly it was cheese. The first few bites were average and the beef wasn’t standing out from the ingredients the way I was hoping it would. All I could really taste was just BBQ sauce and a bit of crunch. The bacon and onion rings added a subtle saltiness, and as for the chips, I would have preferred shoestring fries. Then I decided to add the jalapenos! It was incredible. These spicy little bastards ran riot, and took what at first seemed an average burger, and turned it into something special.
I don’t know how, but they ended up cutting all of the flavours apart. I could finally taste the beef, (which wasn’t profoundly excellent), but it still somehow took a step up! My first “a la Mexico” burger, and it was pretty damn good.”

Summary

Located on the second floor of Melbourne’s iconic Curtain House, The Toff in Town is renowned for being a place for hipsters, scenesters and the music and film elite. But with a recent change of the menu, The Toff now has another box ticked. With the Thai influenced menu being served until the early hours of the morning, this almost out of place, but unique flavoured burger offers a chilli beef and basil pattie with fried egg, lettuce and tomato, all concealed within perfectly sweet bun.

“My favourite bar in Melbourne now offers a burger. I might as well just move in! Absolutely loved it. The spicy beef is well balanced by the soft egg, all on a sweet asian bread roll that is as soft as a cloud. Order 2 if its dinner, or order 1 if its a late night snack. Who are we kidding? Just order 2 regardless.”
“A”two bites and you’re done” kind-of-a burger. Although this was damn good, it will leave you wanting more (we had to order seconds). Please remember this isn’t your typical burger joint, and they don’t serve fries. All in all, it does deliver in taste, but not in value.”
