Summary

BBB is a rough and rustic burger joint, done in typical eclectic Brunswick style. It has a chilled out vibe with an anything goes fit out; all sorts of doors hanging on the walls and you’ll be hard pressed to find a matching table and chair set. Claiming to do things a little differently and positioning themselves as a bit of an anti-establishment take-away joint, they place a huge importance on sourcing local ingredients and believe in big servings that don’t break the bank. This of course, is all served in a casual and friendly way that aims to puts a smile on your face. On a cool Sunday evening we decided to order The Big Buzz burger that came on a home made sourdough bun with a 150gram beef patty (menu says it’s a double but ours came out with a single patty for some reason), tasty cheese, bacon, eggs, beetroot, lettuce and tomato.

“If you’re after your typical Fish’n’Chip shop style burger with a bigger and better patty, this burger is for you. Instead of being wrapped inside a brown paper bag, it was presented tall with a skewer through the middle. However aside from that, everything else was fairly stock-standard. The thick beef patty was cooked well and as with most things, if it’s covered in egg and bacon, it’s going to taste pretty good. Nothing unexpected and will definitely leave you full but with a slightly heftier price tag than similar options in the area.”
“This is Brunswick’s way of doing Grill’d; well, that’s the way I see it. The difference being, Burger Buzz does it in a way Sydney Road locals could be proud to eat in and feel they’re supporting a local hero. The burger itself was basic and ticked all the boxes in my book. This burger felt like a fish & chip burger that was done right with delicious bacon, a thick patty and a well made sourdough bun. Overall I thought the burger was tasty and juicy, but it wouldn’t be a burger I’d travel more than a suburb for. Chips were good and with a free Mountain Goat beer on offer for every burger bought its a damn good deal.”
“There was such a mash of flavours it was hard to know where the bacon started and beetroot ended. It was big and juicy, a touch salty but there was no real character. It’d be hard to pick out of a blind taste test, not that it was awful, but even McDonald’s has a signature flavour or two. The best thing this place has going for it is its meal deals. A free beer with your burger is always going to keep the place full of fashionable flannel.”

Summary

Formerly owned by Essendon FC captain and current coach James Hird, Red Mullet is a great alternative if your wanting to sit down and enjoy your classic fish’n’chip meal with a glass of red. As expected Red Mullet offers a large range of seafood, but they even go as far as tackling the less traditional fish’n’chip shop meals like paella and a variety of curries. You’ll also be able to purchase pre-marinated fish that those wanabe Masterchef’s can take home and cook for themselves. When it comes to hamburgers there are a bunch to choose from, with two fish, a veggie and of course the classic Lot Burger. We went in with an appetite and chose the Lot Burger consisting of a beef pattie, egg, cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato and onion.

“I’ve got to say this is a really appealing burger to look at – all stacked neatly with just enough of a view of each ingredient poking out. For me, the standout for this burger though was the bun. It was really dense, tasty and kept everything together. The beef was a good size and had been cooked well. And, with the egg, bacon and cheese on top, it could do no wrong.”
“I’ve got this belief in life that when you go to a specialty seafood restaurant/Fish’ n’ Chippery, and request a burger, your chances of a good burger are automatically reduced to 50/50. So how was this experience (or adventure)? Well, I would say pleasant. The pattie was nothing special, but was cooked well and did taste OK. The bun reminded me of memory foam. I say that because you would find your finger indentation staying there once pressed into the bun, no bounce back at all! I found that the burger did need some sauce, but overall it was a good filling meal and the chips were ok too. Next time I would try the calamari.”
“This burger was neither here nor there. I really didn’t think much of it. The bun was nice and so were most of the condiments. But really it was a forgettable meal. For a burger packed with a whole lot of ingredients it really was “meh”. But at the same time, it didn’t exactly kick me in the nuts. ”

If you’ve never seen it before you’d be forgiven. When its not being hidden by the buses that stop right out the front, you might not think much of it if you walked past. From both the exterior and interior it looks as if it has been apart of the scenery for yonks. Truth be told, they’ve only been open for around 5 months and their game, as the name suggests, is soup and burgers. Some years ago, owner and chef Scott had a ripper of a soup recipe going. Thinking, “Why the hell not share it with the world”, he decided to open his first establishment. But, Melbourne being Melbourne, where your day can turn from Merino wool to Budgy Smugglers, he knew a soup kitchen alone wasn’t going to be enough. Harking back to his childhood from a family vacation to Queensland, Scott told us all about one particular burger experience that left him gobsmacked and in love. This passion for burgers sees him at Prahran Market every morning scouting for the freshest, juiciest produce. After many trials it was Gary’s Quality Meats that made the cut. With a bunch of different burgers on the menu (all named after people that helped Scott get Souper Burger up and running) he also offers up a selection of winter warming soups and chilli dogs. Using a mix of Chuck, Short Rib and Brisket, some simple seasoning and a homemade burger press Scott dished us out the Perry (named after the Welder that put the joint together). Along with the beef pattie the burger comes on a toasted buttered bun, with lettuce, caramelised onion, tomato, free range bacon, egg, cheddar cheese plus a choice of sauce (we opted for ketchup and mayo).

“As the time passed and we waited for a our meals, I had a feeling this one man show would produce the goods and it’d be worth the wait! With the looks of a good old fish’n’chip shop burger, the beef pattie was subtly seasoned and had been cooked nicely. The combo of the egg and the creamy cheese makes for a burger that was really one of the creamiest I can remember having. The caramelised onions were also perfectly cooked and added a nice sweetness. I really have to say this place is going to give a few other joints of similar style a run for their money.”
“Seeing as it was a slow monday night with only other 2 people in the shop who bought soup, I was wondering why it was taking so long. However, then I took my first bite and understood the time and care this guy puts into making his burgers. The beef was slightly thicker than your average fish’n’chip shop pattie, but it was the extras that really stole the show. The creamy melted cheese, the yolky egg, caramelised onions and a bun soaked in butter is what, for me, set this burger above other similar take away burgers. I have a lot of respect for one man shows who are passionate about their food, I just feel sorry for him when he gets busy.”
“For a place that’s only 5 months old this place looks like it has always been part of the neighbourhood. With a St. Kilda like casualness to it and friendly hospitality this place impressed the hell out of me. The nicely seasoned beef pattie was cooked perfectly. The cheddar cheese slice combined with the mayo made each bite a delight. What topped it for me was the caramelised onion – just oozing with sweetness taking the burger up a level. The bun was nicely toasted with no surprises there. The lettuce and tomato were there and did their job, not taking over the burger. Sorry folks, no chips here, but you don’t really need any. If you feel like you need a side I recommend the Chilli Dog for $5.”
“I walked into this not expecting a whole lot. I know, I’m an asshole. But the concept of soup and burgers together took me to a weird place. But once I bit in to the burger, that weird place turned into paradise. It was so creamy! A whole bunch of sweetness ooozed from the caramelised onions, the bacon was delicious, the cheese and egg fantastic, and the small amount of lettuce and tomato stepped back but did their job. Being lightly seasoned, the meat really didn’t have to stand out a whole lot in regards to creating any overpowering flavours. Instead it worked in harmony with its other counterparts to make me smile with every bite. Being one of the most well-balanced, and enjoyable adventures I’ve had in a while, it really shows that the most important ingredient in a burger is love. ***wipes tear***”

When you arrive, what greets you is an imposing black exterior that leads inside to a large feature wall covered in graffiti, and judging by the chill dudes behind the counter, it was probably graffed by them. Its the kind of place where you’ll find most locals ordering by just walking in, nodding and saying “The usual thanks”. They may be “New School” by appearence but its in their methods of cooking that the “Ol’ School” part of their name really becomes apparent. Of highest praise amidst the neighbourhood are their chips, which are hand-cut and deep fried for just the right amount of time, making them nice and crunchy. Chips aside they offer a pretty familiar Fish’n’Chip shop menu, ranging from battered fish to Chiko rolls. We, of course, went for the Hamburger of 100% Angus Beef, lettuce, tomato, onion, a sesame-seed bun, and then added cheese, egg and bacon for good measure.

“This is one of the biggest and thickest beef patties I’ve had on a Fish ‘n’ Chip style burger. The beef was ground really tight which made for a dense and rough texture. Nothing really stood out about this burger either good or bad. It was exactly what you would expect from a Fish ‘n’ Chip Shop and served its purpose well: you’re hungry and it fills you up. With Danny’s around the corner I’m guessing most people come here for the fish and not the burger, however, the chips were great.”
“Just a straight-up, uncomplicated, unpretentious, basic Fish’ N’ Chip Shop burger. The pattie was simple and well-seasoned, and the cheese was nicely melted and creamy. The bun was just a traditional burger bun that was slightly burnt, but still didn’t take away from the burger. All and all a good Fish ‘n’ Chip experience by a crew that were hospitable and a killer dress sense that you would find in a Beastie Boys video clip circa 1992 – keep it up lads! Chips were good; nice, crispy and well seasoned.”
“In a world full of goody two-shoes 99% fat-free wanabe gourmet burgers, these guys are like Lex Luthor. From the get-go you know what you’re about to consume will be a classic burger that most of us would’ve grown up ordering with a dimmy and potato cake. The only difference with these guys is that they’ve gone for a higher quality Angus beef pattie – which would probably explain the New School Fish ‘N’ Chip price. But it is what it is. The beef was simple and flavoursome but could’ve been cooked a little rarer. It had a sweetish note to it too, like it had been cooked with soy sauce or ketchup. Although my cheese wasn’t melted, which is usually a turn off for me, the flavour that it produced when mixed with the egg was so superbly creamy. I would’ve loved to have seen the egg a little runnier, but on the plus side it resulted in a pretty “mess free, no sliding bun” kind of meal. Overall quite enjoyable, especially coupled with their killer chips.”

A very modern and sleek looking Fish and Burger Bar with both take-away and dine-in options. This place is ideal for summer with plenty of people watching when you sit outside and then in the cooler months, jump back in and grab yourself a spot inside under a heater. The Lot burger consisted of a beef pattie with cheddar cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, egg and cooked onion all on a sesame seed bun. Those readers from Melbourne, keep an eye out for new locations opening up on Chapel st and Clarendon St.

“I think its a bit cheeky to call themselves a Burger Bar considering there are only 2 beef burgers to choose from: Plain and The Lot. For the price its good value for money. The mince was loosely packed and crumbly, nice, but I had to add ketchup. We checked them out on a Sunday night and it was really busy. Chances are it’ll only get busier in the warmer months to come.”

I can’t say this burger blew me away, but I don’t think it had to. It just had to fill me up and be simple. It did what it was suppose to do and that was enough for me. The pattie, bun, egg, lettuce and bacon were good. The only thing that I wasn’t impressed with was the chips.”

One kilometer away from Melbourne’s CBD you’ll find Tribeca Apartments. Nestled amidst their plaza, strip of cafes and shops is Kiwi Fish and Chips. Surrounded by a lot of people waiting to pick up their orders, we sat eating at their communal dining table (signing the odd autograph or two), when suddenly the attention turned to the counter. Fresh from winning the AFL Grand Final, the Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse stops in to have a chat and pick up some dinner for the family! So apart from the random celebrity siting, Kiwi Fish and Chips offers a traditional fish and chip shop menu including burgers, souvlaki and banana fritters, as well as a range of fresh fish that you can take home and cook if your feeling a little bit “Masterchef”. We ended up ordering the Aussie Beef Burger that includes a traditional sesame-seeded bun, a beef pattie, fried egg, onion, cheese, lettuce and tomato. For an extra dollar you can get the Kiwi Burger that comes with added pineapple and beetroot. For those ex-pat Kiwis out there, they even have Lemon & Paeroa (BYO Southern Comfort of course).

“I found this burger pretty choice ay! The bacon was fantastic and was cooked just right; crispy at the edges but still soft in the middle. I really enjoyed the onions. They reminded me of something you’d find on a good hot dog. The beef pattie was quite peppery and had a rough texture to it. The only thing I would suggest is to have the egg less cooked so it were a bit runny and that they’d add tomato sauce from the get-go. Oh the chups were choice as too!”
“With not much competition and other dining options available I can understand why this place was so busy. The burger was good but there was nothing special about it. The beef on its own was quite tough, but flavour-wise wasn’t noticable in the burger. You’ll definitely need to add ketchup. The banana fritter was amazing!”
“For a Fish’ n’ Chip Shop burger I thought it was pretty good. The beef was well sized and seasoned, onions caramelised to perfection and the bacon held it’s own. Two things that I thought slightly went against it was that there was no tomato sauce, which I found it needed. Even a base amount of sauce would have been a good thing and from there it can be up to the customer to add more if they wanted. The second thing was the lettuce.. a little too much. Chips were pretty good too.”
“The bacon was the first thing that grabbed me. It had just the right amount of crunch and saltiness shining through. The beef was altogether enjoyable and peppery, but I would recommend grabbing some ketchup to add some of that sweet zestiness that the orignal was lacking. My hat (if I were wearing one) goes off to the chefs. So many places tend screw this classic, simple but oversized kind-of-a-burger up. One wonders if there is some competition here for the acclaimed Andrews Hamburgers? Next time we’ll ask Mick.”

Formerly a fish-wholesaling business for nearly 50 years, Richmond Oysters has been turned into a very sleek and modern seafood cafe. With options galore, you can either buy fresh fish to take home and cook, or dine in and save yourself the hassle. Offering a few non-seafood dishes as well, we encountered a Burger with The Lot featuring beef, lettuce, tomato, cheese, caramelised onions, bacon, egg, tomato relish, beetroot and chips. Truly a new take on fish’n’chips in Melbourne.

“I have to say that this burger was really hard to eat. It just kept on falling apart. The beef seemed to have a sausage mince or rissole taste, but without any real seasoning. The rest of the ingredients were of good quality, especially the well melted cheese. One of the most important aspects in a burger for me is the bun, and in this case I was let down.”
“I’ll start by pointing out, I copped grief for eating this with a knife and fork, but I was the only one to finish the burger and chips. Although the beef fell apart, it had a great home-made taste to it. The bun was of a similar style, but had too much flour on top. I can also confidently say that these are the best chips in Melbourne.”

What let it down for me was the bun; by the end of the meal it became sponge-like and was far from pretty. Chips were damn good.”
“Like a sexy nun, this burger was a plain tease. It looked awesome as soon as it was brought out, but in the end I was left disappointed. However, highlights did include some great tomato relish and hands-down, some of the greatest chips I’ve had to-date.”
