Summary

One late night with a few drinks under their belt, two friends Lawrence Gozlan and Paul Sanders decided that it was time for something a little different: Hamburgers + Zombies. The undead are everywhere these days – all over our televisions, costume parties, cemeteries and now with us as we sit down to lunch. Located just off the main stretch of busy Acland st, St Kilda, the guys have used the expert skills of street artist Andrew Bourke to spray the place head to tow in Evil Dead inspired graff. Feeling like a couple of zombies ourselves, we tore into their signature Zombie Burger that came with fire-grilled grass-fed beef, beer caramelized onions, melted American cheese, dill pickle, vine-ripened tomatoes, oakleaf lettuce, topped with American mustard, special ZB ketchup, signature ZB mayo all on a toasted brioche bun.

“Why try and re-invent the wheel when you can just imitate the best. This came out a spitting replica of Shake Shack, which isn’t a bad thing to aspire towards. As we all know looks aren’t everything, so I was pleasantly surprised with this super soft, juicy burger experience. The bun was light and fluffy but held up well against the juicy seasoned patty and copious amounts of sauce. The lettuce and tomato gave just a slight crunch and the Kraft single was melted oh so well. It’s not exactly Shake Shack but hey, you have to start somewhere.”
“This was a nice manageable burger that wasn’t too messy and kept things really simple. The highlights were definitely caramelised onions, the lettuce, cheese and of course the flame grilled pattie. Being a local I think I’ll put up with crowds of Irish backpackers and grab myself another. The chips were fresh cut and good.”
“This place smelt like a fad. I didn’t really get it. Sure zombies are awesome: give me baseball bat and a newspaper that reads “Undead Apocalypse” and I’ll be the first guy rushing the gates of the morgue with a smile on my face. All smoke and mirrors aside, the burger was decent. I really liked what the burger had going for it but the high quality beef pattie tasted like it was overloaded with Worcestershire sauce and that didn’t do it for me. I wanted it to be more beefy than saucy. This burger was good and I’m sure it will have plenty of return customers.”

Summary

Ever since December 2012, the rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis has seemed a little bit brighter. Next door to a fishmonger with a cluster of Broadway bulbs shines Paris-New York, a.k.a, PNY. In what may seem like an obviously awesome mix of cultures, PNY have embraced the best of both Paris and NYC, and turned it into their own swanky, hell-bent on quality hamburger joint. With the help of CUT Architects, this two story venue’s monochrome design takes cues from both iconic cities, even managing to subtly reference icons like Statue of Liberty and Eiffel Tower into their interior steel structure. Where it gets exciting is at the menu: they work closely with artisinal producers and get their hands on nothing but top-notch produce. This was made no more apparent than when I ordered the Vintage Cheeseburger. Its beef pattie is aged, chopped in house and comes from French Piebald cattle and the cheese is Somerset Cheddar, aged 18 months. These were served on a toasted brioche bun with pickles, Classic America sauce and a generous serving of fries.

“At first I sort of grumbled to myself about le service being slow. But when le burger came out I had forgotten all about it because this thing was swimming in glorious cheese. My first bite was incredible. Le cheese was quite bold and tended to linger with every mouthful. Le beef was just as tasty: it was fatty, salty and chopped nice and coarse. I’m normally am not a fan of mustard my burgers (must be part of what they call Classic America sauce) but this was really great – it didn’t over power anything. It was predictably French, cooly whispering that it was there and didn’t yell at me like most obnoxious American mustards do. I also couldn’t find a bad fry among the lot of them: so crispy on the outside and soft on the in that I wanted to eat them by the fistful. This was truly an outstanding Burger Adventure that I hope le other dudes get to tick off their list one day. Merci Paris-New York.”

Summary

A South-African Greek by the name of George Halamandaris took a trip to the U.S.A in the 60’s and came back with a passion for beef. This resulted in the opening of some of South Africa’s first steakhouses. Come 1970, his son John looked to expand into the “quick-service” burger world and opened the original Steers in Jo’burg. Twenty years later in the early 1990s and the Steers name had expanded to over 250 stores and beyond the South African borders with outlets in Swaziland, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Mauritius, Zambia, Tanzania and Ivory Coast. Today there are over 500 franchises across South Africa and Africa. After being recommended to me by a local from Mauritius, I ventured into it’s capitals store and ordered their signature Original King Steer burger that came on a traditional burger bun with two 100% beef patties, red onion, American Cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles and BBQ sauce. For a little extra I got the combo in order to try their 14 year in a row award winning chips.

“Essentially, this is much like any old average fast-food burger. Its a tad-bit like a Whopper, minus the mayonnaise, add a BBQ/teriyaki style sauce. The nicest part of all this having my fast-food served home-style: on a plate. The patties weren’t great quality but with all that of sauce to drown them all you needed was a decent consistency of the pattie. Beef is pretty expensive here so I want expecting much. Mauritius isn’t known for its hamburger culture so I was prepared for sub-par specimen. That being said, if you’re drunk or hungover you’ll enjoy this.”

Summary

Located on a compact, corner block with a spiffy new modern interior, New York Minute comes from pretty good pedigree as the owner is previously of Danny’s Burgers in Fitzroy and St Kilda. Offering a short but sweet menu these guys are open 7 days a week from breakfast ’til 10pm with nothing over $10. One sleepy Sunday night amongst the aroma of two of our favourite smells (coffee and burgers), we eagerly awaited their New York Mac with 2 Beef patties, special sauce, spinach leaves, Swiss cheese, pickles, onion and one and half buns.

“It takes some balls and confidence to take on the big guys when it comes to imitating an absolute classic however, I really think they’ve done it justice with their own twist. The 2 thin patties covered in cheese, combined with the 3 soft buns meant a super soft burger experience that contrasted really well with the sharpness of the special sauce and pickle. I was left looking a complete mess but I’d be happy to tackle it all over again.”
“This was what a real Big Mac should taste like! It had a real home made and slightly healthy spin to it with the inclusion of spinach and a higher grade of beef. The pattie tasted great and combined with the cheese and mayo it was like a gift from the take away gods. Delivered with minimal spinach so to avoid that gritty feeling in your teeth, the only real down side was that the bun was a bit too thick – especially the middle bun. The chips were great and were well worth paying an extra $5.50.”
“I ordered the New York Mac and didn’t even know what I was in store for. It arrived before me and all the planets aligned. A little hard to manage at first but when you bite in you those memories of when you graduated from Happy Meals to the big boy meals started to flood back. They’ve made their own special sauce, got the onions right and the pickles were spot on – but multiply any McExperience you’ve had with a wheelbarrow of quality and flavour and, this is where the New York Mac is at. The beef patties had a sweetness to them and the Swiss cheese was a beautiful creamy touch. It really makes you rethink ever eating a Big Mac again.”

Sister venue to the much loved Railway Club Hotel, O’Connell’s of South Melbourne has prided itself on producing award winning food and service in a relaxed and inviting environment since 1990. Their kitchen has seen the likes of Greg Malouf, Cath Kalka and Adrian Richardson who have helped cement O’Connell’s as the go-to South Melbourne Gastropub year after year. Now with two younger chefs, Luke Van de Engel and Xavier Mercader at the helm, their emphasis on quality is as strong as ever. Working closely with suppliers, farmers and producers they aime to source the best and freshest ingredients on offer. The Restaurant Menu features dishes like Red wine braised Beef Short Rib, Squid ink tagliatelle and Cape Grim steaks as well as over 100 wines to choose from around the world. Sitting in the restaurant’s cosy dining area, we ordered the Beef Burger (available on the bar menu too) and it arrived swiftly on a brioche bun packed with bread and butter pickles, cheese, mustard, house made ketchup and French fries.

“When using such strong flavours as mustard, pickles and caramelised onions, I often prefer a “less is more” approach, and think I would of enjoyed this burger a lot more had both of the buns not been coated in large amounts of fiery mustard. The boldness of these flavours didn’t really pair well with the delicateness of the sweet and soft brioche bun. It ended up overwhelming the beef pattie which, tasted on its own, managed to retain a lot of its juiciness and flavour.”
“The char flavoured pattie was cooked to perfection and had me going back for more. This was beautifully supported by the distinct sharpness and smokiness of the cheddar. Always sure to please my distinct tastes was the double mustard and pickles. And it wouldn’t be a modern day burger if it didn’t have a sweet and soft brioche bun to keep everything nicely together. The chips were good but don’t feel the need to use the chutney – I don’t think you’ll need it.”
“Obviously a popular dish because we saw many coming out of the kitchen. Arriving at our table it looked as pretty as a Parisian morning. You could just imagine the juices that were about to pour out when you bit it. Yet, none of the afore mentioned took place. Yes, it was a tasty burger but my eyes did deceive me. The pattie could’ve been pinker and the cheese could’ve been way creamier. Overall I think I liked it, but I felt like I’d been invited to a girls place late at night, just to discover we’re going to midnight mass.”

The Wilde is the perfect habitat for both the native hipster and your everyday punter that enjoys Traditional Golden Ale, some good Rock n’ Roll and British gastro pub food. This cosy eatery is brought to you by the former owners of Rue de Fleurus, that decided over a year ago to shut shop and reposition this little Fitzroy nook to a British gastro pub/bar. After experiencing some decent buzz since the re-launch, we thought we’d join the party to see what the chatter was all about. We ordered The Wilde Burger that came with a beef pattie, smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, cornichons, burger sauce and chips.

“It was a nice, small and compact burger that was more filling than it looked. The beef pattie was cooked through with a nice crust of char – working really well with the thin and salty piece of bacon. The bun was really crunchy and robust, ideally matched with the spicy mayo and the tang from the pickle. I just wish I could of enjoyed this burger in a place that wasn’t so dark and loud and, full of such cool people. However I am aware that this has more to do with me getting old.”
“The dense pattie was cooked well, had a good punch of flavour and had cheese seductively melted all over it. The little slices of pickles together with the crispy, salty bacon had me constantly going to my pint of Golden Ale to wash down the saltiness – great! There wasn’t much green stuff in it besides a piece of lettuce that you can choose to put into your burger if you are that way inclined. I thought overall it was an enjoyable salty experience, but don’t go there hungry – the burger was a tad small. The thick chips were really good and only got better with the thick pasty burger sauce to dip in.”
“Although a little on the small side (give me less chips and more burger next time), it was really enjoyable. I am told there was bacon in the burger, but boy did that go way over my head. I honestly didn’t taste it. The whole thing screamed of salt, a pinch more and it would’ve been overkill. Their choice of bun made it taste like it was a DIY-home-burger that one of your mates is trying to impress you with. I’m thinking that a larger version of this burger would’ve taken it up a notch for me. I was just left a little unsatisfied after the whole meal. It’s a ballsy move putting a burger on the menu, especially with Belle’s Diner over the road… And it’s hard to compete with that.”

Summary

You wouldn’t pick it by looking at the modern interior however, The Duke is Melbourne’s oldest licensed pub, having first opened its doors in 1853. Having recently re-opened for its latest reincarnation we are guessing it’s seen some big changes occur over the years, especially since its neighbours are The Forum Theatre and Federation Square (well, almost neighbour). The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner offering contemporary Australian and International dishes, and with the bar boasting 20 beers on tap, The Duke really caters to everyone. We sat down late one evening for the Duke Burger made with a house ground beef pattie, cheddar cheese, lettuce, bacon, tomato, mayo, dill pickles and a side of house cut chips.

“This burger had all the right ingredients and characteristics of a great burger however, several aspects really let it down. For starters the piece of lettuce had a giant, cold, spine in it. The slice of tomato was too thick and it really took away the attention from the thick, juicy beef pattie covered in large amount of melted cheddar cheese. Unfortunately the bacon was cooked a little too long and turned rubbery and chewy.To top it off the very sweet and flaky brioche bun was quite dry and left a strange texture once chewed through.”
“There were some really good takeaways from this burger. The pattie for instance was average, but when topped off with a bit of melted cheese, it told me someone in the kitchen cares. The dill pickle had some good crunch to it and really gave the burger some attitude. I did find that the brioche bun let it down; it was sweet as you would expect however, very crumbly and by the end of the meal my plate and lap were full of crumbs. The chips were very good and evenly cooked – especially being thick cut where I find a lot of people get it wrong. For the price I think it could of been better.”
“Plenty of ups an downs with this one. But nothing that would make you slap the chef. Maybe a quiet
word would suffice. The pattie was plenty meaty, soft and salty. The strips of bacon that fell out from my meal also salty and made no enemies (how could you hate bacon right?). Where the burger fell apart for me, both literally and metaphorically, was at the bun. For the last two years the use of brioche has been epic. Every corner of the city boasts a burger with brioche. Now we all know brioche is sweet, but this was more like a croissant. Have it with some jam and coffee in the morning and you’ve got a delightful breakfast. A half-decent burger but I wouldn’t run into the city for it.”
