Melbourne’s Top 10 – 2014

Top 10 – 2014
“2014 saw an influx of new burger joints. Bad luck for us as it made this years list our absolute toughest. There are some familiar names in this years Top 10, but there are also a few little surprises. Congratulations to all those who made the cut!”

“There’s a bit of spice and everything nice to our number 10. Lots of bacon and a fatty patty are sure to warm you on a cold Melbourne night.”

“Our hero from years passed. This burger hits you with plenty of meat but then holds you close with a soft bun.”

“Consistently delicious. You pay more for this but you’re getting a quality burger with a lot of sweet, acidic flavours that contrast a fatty Wagyu patty.”

“We’ve had San Francisco’s famous Umami burger, but NSHRY’s creation blows them out of the water. A unique burger that is always at home in our Top 10.”

“Greasy enough to impress old school burger fans, but soft and fluffy enough to appease the Brighton locals. This cheesy mess is sure to hit the spot.”

“These guys have one of the best balanced burgers going around. It’s creamy, sweet, soft, salty and all wrapped up like Christmas.”

“We’re impressed more and more every time we eat here. This Kraft Single filled badboy can’t be faulted. Probably Melbourne’s most consistent burger.”

“It’s soft and smokey, and, puts the patty on a pedestal. A new edition to our Top 10 has made quite the mark on these burger fans. Welcome Le Bon Ton!”

“It’s the kind of burger that leaves you regretting ordering a fries and shake and makes you order another one. Soft, beefy and cheesy – 8bit has got serious game.”

“When you bite in and all you can hear over the cheese and beef in your mouth is muffled expletives, then you’re on a winner. From the gooey cheese to perfectly seasoned patty it’s an honour to have Laurie Dee’s as Melbourne’s new number 1!”

Totally agree with this decision! I have never tasted a better burger in my life.

Helen ( February 3, 2015 at 10:54 )

Need to review the Wagyu Burger at the Piggery Cafe in Sherbrooke. Made by the Chef that used to make the Rockpool Burger.

ryan ( February 3, 2015 at 11:17 )

I’m with you guys… Laurie Dee’s is HANDS DOWN my favourite burger in Melbourne and NEVER disappoints! Thanks for doing all the research and posting!

Dave Lourdes ( February 3, 2015 at 12:04 )

No Andrews burgers in Albert Park?

Tommi ( February 3, 2015 at 12:40 )

Wow! No Simpsons Burgers and Chips or Mr. Burger? I had
Laurie Dees and thought it was average compared to the ones
I’ve just mentioned.

Anonymous ( February 3, 2015 at 13:05 )

Just to stir the pot. I TOTALLY DISAGREE with No 1.
I know I have not experienced as many burgers as you experts, but I do know that the burger I consumed at Laurie Dee’s was a once only occasion as it was the most disgusting grease laden mess and felt a heart attack was imminent afterwards, lucky there was a hosptial nearby
Maybe I needed to be really hungover or starving to death to enjoy it. My local fish and chips does a way better burger!

Cuz ( February 3, 2015 at 14:22 )

You haven’t been to Wonky Trolley in North Melbourne then..

Anonymous ( February 3, 2015 at 14:57 )

Laurie Dees is the bomb, single patty cheese and bacon all the way!

Anonymous ( February 3, 2015 at 15:20 )

Theres this place in oakleigh called burgled ive been too a couple of times that specialises in burgers… kinda making me hungry now

michael ( February 3, 2015 at 15:23 )

Totally agree with your top 10. I’ve tried all of them except RockPool…. so Mr.Scruffs gets the nod in the only change to your spot on list.

gastev ( February 3, 2015 at 15:25 )

Well deserved number 1, the people there always work hard to deliver a great burger!!!

Robert ( February 3, 2015 at 15:36 )

Well, this is a complete shock. I ate at Laurie Dee’s 2 days ago and was less than impressed. This place fits in well with the TGI Friday’s and other chain restaurants it shares space with. Definitely not worth the trip to Epping!
The highlight was the crispiness of the smashed patty, but the rest was just, meh! Soft, McDonald’s bun with too much cheese and too much sauce.
Lucky for you guys that some of my favorites are right up there on your list: 8bit and Spotted Mallard. Otherwise I might lose all faith in your recommendations.
Will be checking out Royale Brother’s soon, although bit concerned about the cheese now…

Kris ( February 3, 2015 at 15:52 )

No Maha? Go home, you’re drunk

Hammo ( February 3, 2015 at 15:55 )

As much as I love 8bit, dandenong pavillion and Andrews (not considered gourmet I know) i have say Laurie Dees is well worth the drive to Epping.

Jay Eye ( February 3, 2015 at 16:15 )

No Tuck Shop Takeaway??

Do your homework next time guys….

Joe ( February 3, 2015 at 16:22 )

… Really? 8-bit made this list? Yet no tuckshop takeaway? You guys really need to be less biased. 8-bit is no better than my local fish and chip shop burger.

Akarva ( February 3, 2015 at 16:50 )

No surprise that there’s a fair influence of either American style burgers ie: American cheddar, salt packed with sugar loaded buns that’s do taste great but are certainly not something you can eat regularly or places such as Rickpool. At their prices they’d want to be good. New York Minute is clearly in Melbourne’s top ten for both the value and the quality of their product. And it never misses in terms of consistency. Never feel like you’ve eaten a dirty burger afterwards either. Keep up the good work though guys.

Anonymous ( February 3, 2015 at 16:58 )

What about Dude Food, Tuck Shop Takeaway, Jus Burgers, Chase Kitchen

Disagree with Laurie Dees, The Merrywell. But glad you went back & tried them again. Guess we just have different tastes.

Connie ( February 3, 2015 at 17:56 )

What about Brother Burger? They are better than 8-bit!

Hung ( February 3, 2015 at 19:37 )

The worst burger Top 10 Melbourne has had to read. How much do these rubbish burger joints pay you. You should be ashamed of yourself. There is not one real Burger in your top 10.

Jaycen ( February 3, 2015 at 21:38 )

Brother Burger didn’t get a mention! Can’t believe it.

Vince ( February 3, 2015 at 22:23 )

cant believe Mistys Diner is not in the top 10… Best burgers you’ll ever taste ^_^!!

Anonymous ( February 3, 2015 at 23:02 )

YOU FORGOT MISTY’S DINER!!! Craving a burger from there right now 🙁

Anonymous ( February 3, 2015 at 23:03 )

Not a bad selection… But all of these are same same American style heart attack burgers. Ribs & Burgers should have made the list for being delicious and different.

Anonymous ( February 3, 2015 at 23:58 )

OMG YES! Ribs & Burger for sure…

Jenny ( February 4, 2015 at 00:00 )

8 bit … Average 6/10. Also pricey
Doesn’t matter how hip the staff think they are the food was average

Me ( February 4, 2015 at 11:21 )

Haters gonna hate hate hate….

Mr Burger ( February 5, 2015 at 17:31 )

You forgot mcdonalds oh sorry I thought it was top 1000

John ( February 5, 2015 at 21:55 )

MIstys Burgers!! Sloppy crap, 8 bit for me all the way

MICKA ( February 6, 2015 at 14:20 )

Great fast food burger, but not sure it can be classed in the same league as these other establishments.

anonymous ( February 6, 2015 at 15:28 )

No Beatbox? Is that a first?

Spotted Mallard have let their standards drop since they got a new chef.

DC ( February 7, 2015 at 02:49 )

Merrywell over three crowns and mr scruffs. I think im gonna unfollow you now

Ray ( February 9, 2015 at 23:42 )

Declaring a burger that is about 20-30% as good as Ralph’s Beatbox to be No. 1 is, at best, misguided. That said burger resides in Epping, requiring a journey of Mordor like proportions, changes the declaration from misguided to downright irresponsible.

Gentlemen, you no longer know what you are doing. Thankyou for the first few albums, but I’m afraid I like your old stuff better than your new stuff.

Max Rockatansky ( February 14, 2015 at 11:06 )

8-bit? Really? I’m surprised it made the list at all, let alone the number 2 spot. At best it’s an overpriced fish’n’chip shop burger. At worst it’s an overpriced fish’n’chip shop burger with a 40-minute wait.

digby ( February 18, 2015 at 23:24 )

How is Dude Food Man not on here???!

Stefan ( February 19, 2015 at 13:22 )

Where is Tuck Shop Takeaway?

Chris ( February 20, 2015 at 21:08 )

I hope Le Bon Ton’s burger is all that because their oysters are a monumental rip off! Tiny, overpriced and dry

Georgina ( February 21, 2015 at 11:37 )

You have obviously not tried the La Luna Bistro beef burger, bacon, pickles & cheese, fries….the best burger I have had in a long time

La Luna Bistro
320 Rathdowne Street, Carlton North VIC 3054

Glenn ( February 21, 2015 at 16:04 )

You guys clearly need to try Bobo’s Diner in Frankston! Some really awesome burgers there, worthy of your top 10.

Anonymous ( February 22, 2015 at 01:35 )

Wow it seems you have had a massive taste profile change.
Or perhaps $$$$ are talking. Used to have immense
respect for your reviews. Laurie Dees?? Come on guys,

Tony ( February 23, 2015 at 09:43 )

You guys haven’t tried JD’s burgers? They’re pretty new (since Sept 2014 I believe) but already topped into the top 5 burgers in melbourne 2014 & 2015.

Do agree with the the list, great burgers and great find

Jay ( February 28, 2015 at 10:15 )

Zero respect

Tony ( March 2, 2015 at 21:46 )

Great choice especially for the #1 and I live locally to it. I tried at least 7 of the 10 burgers that were in the top 10.

Quite frankly top 3 are spot on. Actually too be honest I wouldn’t of cared had 8bit piped Laurie Dees to the #1 spot and Laurie Dee’s went #2. Im a huge Laurie Dee’s fan and its my favourite burger joint. But I am surprised to not see Andrews Burger or even Wonky Trolley not to mention The Beer and Burger Bar.

But anyways. As for some of the commentary…..The Misty’s Diner in Reservoir has decent burgers but the place is horrible too many flies and mosquitoes around. Burgers and Ribs. The worst piece of burger place Ive ever been to especially the one in Northcote. Had to wait 45 mins on a Sunday evening. They had no mustard (what kind of a burger joint doesn’t even have Mustard). Top it all off I had half the meat patty uncooked, didnt even finish my burger. Not to mention to damn pricey for its own good.

Congrats to Laurie Dee’s well deserved for its hard work!

Tyre 1847 ( March 3, 2015 at 09:42 )

Merrywell surely pays for this right. If anyone bothered to read the menu then check to see if the ingredients match what is in that burger you would be heading straight upstairs to Macca’s for a Bigmac.

Burgerkingnqueen ( March 22, 2015 at 15:11 )

Laurie Dee’s definitely deserves the number 1 spot!

Dev ( April 8, 2015 at 12:39 )

I am not sure I agree with all of your top 10. Laurie Dee’s??? Really??? My heart sounds like a phone vibrating when I think about the imminent heart attack from there.
ROCKWELL & SONS try hard but the couple of times I have been there I have found their burger overly salty. I would rather go to Huxtaburger with there mustard overkill.
Someone mentioned Burger Lounge. While this used to be one of my favourites, they have really dropped the ball over the last 12 months.
And we know why Andrews is not on the list. It’s because they are a class above 🙂
Off to Fat Bob’s now for lunch

Matt4burgers ( May 1, 2015 at 12:16 )

Laurie Dee’s is good but not no.1 in my book. Love the crisp chariness on the patties but buns are average and bought-in, too much cheese and grease as a few others have alluded to. Rockwell (bun, sauce, seasoning), merrywell (choices, seasoning, bun) and nshry (detail, complexity in flavour and texture) that LD’s doesn’t quite have.

Han ( May 14, 2015 at 14:15 )

Love 8bit made list. On their day make the best American style burger. Can be a little inconsistent and too long of a wait so glad it did not take it out. Andrews burgers are one of the favs, they have the consistency aswell. Thanks for mixing them up guys so we can see new places I would not new existed.

Go 8bit ( June 13, 2015 at 09:10 )

Well deserved. Laurie Dee’s is a rare killer in the oversaturated melbourne market. I just wished it was closer to town – but anytime I make the trip i’m always happy I did. Also the only place I know of in Melbourne serving frozen custard and frozen custard shakes. I respect you guys for choosing a place that hasn’t tried to be wanky and pretentious, those guys just seem to be real passionate about burgers. Lots of other good burgers on the list too, but LD is a definite standout. Good work.

Thomas ( June 19, 2015 at 20:19 )

Unfortunately the food at the Spotted Mallard has gone downhill since they changed chefs.

Had their beef wagyu burger last week and I haven’t experienced such an awful dry patty/cold bun combination since B.East.

Unfortunately for the Mallard it’s not just the burgers, but the poutine is not what it used to be and they’ve removed some of the better items off their menu.

So now it’s just $14 pints with a side order of imitation jazz and blues.

DC ( July 4, 2015 at 02:54 )

Where do I buy brioche buns?

kelly ( July 9, 2015 at 19:31 )

And Burger Burger in Surrey Hills are awesomeness.

kelly ( July 9, 2015 at 19:32 )

Jays Diner on the road before ballarat makes a pattie that melts in your mouth

Grantski ( July 28, 2015 at 20:13 )

Good on you guy love the list. Spot on.
Keep up the good work.

Joane ( October 2, 2015 at 07:58 )

I have had all of those burgers you’ve listed for Sydney and I agree with you.. although you should visit Bar Luca in Sydney. Their burgers are epic!!
