This is nothing but lies and propaganda!

No Andrew’s? No Danny’s?

How dare you suggest that either Danny or Andrew do not make the BEST burger in the country get beaten by this crew of malcontents!

How very dare you sir!

roj ( January 29, 2013 at 19:59 )

Merrywell bun is average!

samson ( January 29, 2013 at 20:49 )

Danny’s all the way!!

Mike ( January 29, 2013 at 20:54 )

Andrews is a terrible burger, maybe
10 years ago but after 4 changes
of hands it’s a bloody terrible burger, full stop.

Stu ( January 29, 2013 at 21:07 )

Danny’s is terrible not Andrews, so sorry !

Stu ( January 29, 2013 at 21:08 )

huxtaburger shouldve been higher

Benjamin ( January 29, 2013 at 21:16 )

@Benjamin

Slightly higher but not too much.

I think the burgers are far too salty, and surely you have to take a few points off for being so slow..

Ron ( January 29, 2013 at 22:21 )

But regardless of the order, it’s a great solid list !

Ron ( January 29, 2013 at 22:23 )

Thank Goodness Danny’s is no longer up there, should never be rated at all. Thumbs up for Merrywell, it is a step above.

Rick ( January 29, 2013 at 22:34 )

Burger Lounge in Eltham is not even in the top 10… this is hardly a comprehensive list.

Bob ( January 30, 2013 at 00:38 )

To not include TGIF’s Jack Daniels Burger with Cajun onion rings as one of the top is sinful! Your list absolutely sucks! I also love the Grill’d Summer Sunset.. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.. nomnomnomnomnom..

Cat ( January 30, 2013 at 09:02 )

No Jus Burger?

Lucky ( January 30, 2013 at 10:09 )

Ha! if you think burger lounge in Eltham deserves to be on there you obviously need to get out of Eltham once in a while

Brendan ( January 30, 2013 at 13:18 )

I want to congratulate you guys. This is a great list.
Well done.

J. Megahan ( January 30, 2013 at 14:25 )

what about the most liked post? The B.East?

Maz ( January 30, 2013 at 15:17 )

the new place in ballarat should be on the list… it is unreal! nothing like it in australia !

burgaholic ( January 30, 2013 at 15:21 )

Anyone who raves about Danny’s clearly hasn’t been there recently. Value still there, but the product has slipped mightily. Hope they get it back!

Scottmagnum ( January 30, 2013 at 15:29 )

It never ceases to amaze me how many people rave about these substandard places (Danny’s, Burger Lounge, Grill’d) and criticise your list when it is obvious they’ve not tried any of these truly great burgers.
I think this is your best list yet guys. Danny’s is really quite awful and never deserved a place, and as much as I love Andrew’s I don’t think it can really rub shoulders with the rest of this list. Although it is the best traditional, dirty fish n chip shop style burger around.

Keep up the search and entertaining reviews. Great stuff.

Daryl ( January 31, 2013 at 13:35 )

I agree with you completely Daryl.

These guys have come a long way, I remember the early days when they used to rave about Grill’d burgers!!

People who think Danny’s and all those pseudo gourmet chains are the best really aren’t trying hard enough.

It’s great that Danny’s have been around forever, but they aren’t very good burgers, and beside the guys here have already paid their respects to them and included them in other best of lists so it’s time to move on.

Anonymous ( February 2, 2013 at 15:04 )

In terms of the food truck battle of burgers. I would have to put Mr.Burger on top of Beatbox kitchen. I’ve had both and I can’t remember the first time I had Beatbox. But the first time I had Mr.Burger, I remember that. The pickles, mustard, ketchup and everything else in there just works so well together.

Josh ( February 5, 2013 at 12:06 )

Parlour Diner was excellent – went there based on this top 10.

MJ ( February 5, 2013 at 13:09 )

Great list, but Huxtaburger should of defiantly beaten Parlour diner. Don’t get me wrong Parlour was good but really thought Huxtaburger should of made it further down.
Also Grill’d should never even be on this list.
Good stuff guys.

NM ( February 5, 2013 at 16:11 )

Danny’s doesn’t have pickles…

Blah ( February 6, 2013 at 18:10 )

Huxtaburger is greasy vomit, will be out of business in a year or two.

Parlour is far far far better

James ( February 7, 2013 at 09:16 )

The service at merrywell was appalling! Such jerks!
Mr burger is definitely one of my new favs though! Glad to see them on the list.

Rebecca ( February 7, 2013 at 13:20 )

Babu Bar Burger on Chapel Street is easily up there in the top couple of burgers in Melbourne.

Hasnt even rated a mention yet.

BD ( February 21, 2013 at 16:41 )

Currently in the process of completing this adventure. Every saturday this month has been filled with cheesy goodness. Although I have had most of these burgers in the past, its good to take a few mates around and spread the work about these places. HOWEVER – Huxtaburger should have been higher…..Clearly one of the best…Certainly better than beatbox kitchen. I love both, but Huxta is just amazing.

Paul ( February 21, 2013 at 18:20 )

Andrews was a huge disappointment when we went there a few weeks ago for the first time. About equivalent to a decent fish and chip shop burger. We just couldn’t understand the rave reviews. Baffling.

Initial impression of the Merrywell was glowing, we absolutely loved it. Been there five times now, unfortunately had to lower our rating significantly. Had one fantastic Merrywell, one average, one terrible. One decent K.I.S.S, one rubbish. Very inconsistent, but more bad than good. Very surprised by it getting first spot.

Gurbachen ( February 21, 2013 at 21:53 )

Where’s mistys?after being to the states I would say its the closest thing to an actuall American burger. Where’s jus burger? How the hell is the merrywell #1. This is propaganda.

Anonymous ( March 10, 2013 at 11:17 )

I’m glad B.East isn’t anywhere in there.

I’ve been there twice now and the burgers are revolting, and the service is just awful.

I had a burger come straight from the kitchen that was cold. COLD.

I don’t know why it’s always so busy? Dumb hipsters I guess.

It’s a shame that The Gem didn’t keep their cheeseburger as a regular menu item because it’s one of the best I’ve tasted.

DC ( March 13, 2013 at 23:53 )

Hi guys great list…those people suggesting Huxtaburger is great need their palate examined by a shrink. The burger is salty and yes the sauce is great, but they often put far too much on and it completely overwhelms the total flavour. I should know I work in Collingwood and eat burgers at least once a week. They were good in the past, but sadly success has made them lazy. If you go around the corner literally on Peel Street, a new place has just opened …go find yourself an insane burger there (I like the Mex) – it’s called the Star Hotel. I forecast it will be in the top 3 next year. Mark my words.

Josh ( March 20, 2013 at 20:40 )

grilled and dannys!

potato ( April 29, 2013 at 13:12 )

I think the guy’s who try these burgers should make there way to the western suburbs to a place called New York Minute, the best burger I have ever eaten in Melbourne.

James ( April 30, 2013 at 15:37 )

I have tried many of the burgers listed in this top ten and none compare to the feeling of complete satisfaction one gets when consuming the Barney Allen’s burger. How Barney Allen’s did not make top ten is beyond me! It questions the credibility of this entire website! Clearly not enough thought or research has gone into this top ten. I call for a revamp of the top ten.

Andy ( May 9, 2013 at 13:33 )

I chanced upon a new place called Bobs burgers in Moorrabbin and was blown away by the Hummer Burger. Gonna go back and make my way through the menu.

Ronson ( May 11, 2013 at 12:58 )

Merrywell is overrated. Above average at best, don’t understand how it’s number one when you compare it to some of the other great burgers on the list. As for those saying Andrew’s and Danny’s, all I can say is lol. Those burgers are on par with your average, run of the mill fish and chip shop, if not worse.

If you get off on dry and tasteless patties resembling frozen, home-brand patties from the supermarket, by all means, you may consider their omittance “lies and propaganda”.

Jimbo Jones ( May 19, 2013 at 00:42 )

I’m not sure about the Merrywell pick for #1. There are way better burgers out there and like Drugstore Espresso burger!

William ( May 27, 2013 at 18:28 )

Nshry umami was shit as

Alex Nguyen ( May 28, 2013 at 14:58 )

there is a new burger place in town they are in swan street richmond
called The Beer and Burger lounge loved it
guys go down and you can be judge it for your self

gabriel ( May 30, 2013 at 12:46 )

Su do nan goes down well with burgers

Kevin Vu ( May 31, 2013 at 01:10 )

people, please just say no to turkish rolls as burger buns
they are all wrong, too heavy
burgers should not be akin to trecking through heavy sludge…
there is a good reason why middle eastern bread based street foods are light on for toppings, like pide, the warm bread is the snack & it does all the talking
thus, turkish rolls cannot cope with a slab of beef in the middle
please, cease & desist this practice immediately

bob ( June 4, 2013 at 01:36 )

Mr.burger is easily the best followed by rockwell and sons

Burgerking ( June 13, 2013 at 17:41 )

I dont understand why the maccas chesseburger isnt number one who doesnt love a chessy ?

Julia canavan ( June 13, 2013 at 19:59 )

Just had an amazing burger at Ribs & Burgers in Northcote. Ranks up there with Andrews 5 years ago. Yummy.

Steve ( June 15, 2013 at 14:32 )

^^ agreed, Ribs & Burgers is insanely good, that pink sauce. Shame about the position though.

Can’t believe Parlour rated so highly, probably one of the biggest let downs out there, where’s the sauce!

Toby ( June 20, 2013 at 13:14 )

I was going to follow your list and visit some of the places you mentioned but seeing Merrywell being number makes me doubtful of your judgement since i have been there and it is definitely not worthy of first place.

Anonymous ( June 24, 2013 at 14:54 )

Any “burger” restaurant which does not give you the option of extra pattie or patties is not a true burger restaurant

That pretty much wipes everything on this list

Andrews and Danny’s give you that option. They are true burger joints

And the whole concept of a burger isn’t to transform it into some gourmet dish…it is supposed to be a sloppy messy experience and no better than Andrews to go go to for that (Danny’s in second place)

I feel sorry for anyone who hasn’t tried Andrews or Danny’s

I feel even more sorry for those who have and are unable to appreciate the greatness of these burgers

Triple pattie FTW!!

Almeida ( June 24, 2013 at 23:51 )

You blokes need to get your new-age hair-do’s and trendy clothes out of cosmopolitan Melbourne and get yourself on the highways of Central Victoria. Here is where the legend lies. Not intrusively large or lady-like small, this burger leaves Victoria’s latest road project redundant as thousands of trucks bypass the Nagambie bypass to enter a town that hosts the great Greek’s take on a true Aussie burger. A burger so juicy you’ll be licking from finger tip to wrist, this burger gets the mix of bun to burger just right. Nothing fancy, just a tasty patty, an exquisite egg, a low budget plastic cheese, maramalised onion, a bit of rabbit business and a whole lot of love, this burger leaves you grasping for your your chips to run along the breadth of the plate.

I present you the Nagambie cafe Burger with the Lot.

PS. Enjoy the panoramic views across the great Nagambie Lake.

BJ Plank ( July 11, 2013 at 15:27 )

This is a horrendous list.

First of all, merrywell, Nshry, rockpool, mr burger, parlour, belle and trunk do not deserve to be in the list.

Huxtaburger and rockwell are good burgers and should be somewhere on the list, but not in the top 3.

I haven’t tried beatbox yet. Plan to soon.

In my opinion, my top 3 would be Andrews as no.1, round the way as no. 2, Danny’s as no. 3.
Andrews make the best overall burger, round the way has amazing take on the bagel style burger with excellently cooked meat and phenomenal sauces, and Danny’s have the best classical burger for dirt cheap.

Huxtaburger and Rockwell I would keep in the list.

Ribs and burgers I agree should be in there, the burger lounge in eltham also, burger monster in docklands is also amazing (in fact I would put this as no. 4), the B east should make the list and last spot would be a battle between Joe’s bar and dining hall and the tree of us in richmond

Bryce ( July 29, 2013 at 00:24 )

Now that I have had Beatbox, it easily movies into my top 5. Probably 4th. The burger was extraordinary!!

Henry Bryce ( August 4, 2013 at 13:56 )

Merrywell was fantastic. so juicy and full of flavour. chips were average when I went though

i liked the Rockpool burger as well, but it might have been a little ‘posh’.

was also very impressed with Beer and Burger Bar on Swan St recently.

I really loved Beatbox the first time I went, but the 2nd time, not so good.

The Bottom End burger was amazing, but I think their kitchen is closed at the moment?

Misty’s is shit tbh. not sure how anyone could say it’s like an american burger. their Philly Cheese Steak was disgusting as well

anyway, good to see more and more burger joints turn up.

frostilicus ( August 5, 2013 at 15:08 )

The B.East burgers are one of the worst burgers I have ever had. No thought, imagination & quality produce goes into them, just Putrid. They should never be talked about on this website.

As for Jus burgers, the burgers look a million dollars but just don’t add up. it is amazing how tasteless they are.

The best burgers that have been thought about, crafted and use quality produce are Beatbox Kitchen & the Wagyu beef burger at Rockpool bar and grill.

Fletch ( August 22, 2013 at 15:47 )

Whilst a Danny’s and an Andrew’s burger are traditional, fresh and consistent, they are not “amazing” burgers. PERSONALLY the did not amaze me like a Huxtaburger did, however i did thoroughly enjoy them. I believe they are good burgers, however ones much like the burgers you can get at your local fish and chip shop, and have evidently been left behind after the world burger evolution. Whilst we acknowledge the fact that Danny’s and Andrews serve a high standard traditional burger, we must acknowledge that they lack modern ingenuity. Clearly those who are criticizing this list (which I think is respectable, however not perfect as Dannys and Andrews do deserve a place) do not hold the same culinary expertise of those who put this list together. Good effort, however not yet there I say. Having said that, everyone is entitled to their opinion and that is simply what is offered in this list: an opinion.

Alex ( August 25, 2013 at 22:42 )

This is funny. There’s not a vast variety of technique in any of these burgers.. Really, it’s not a difficult product to get right (especially if you’re in the business of making burgers). To suggest that Merrywell for example, is far better than Huxtabuger is ridiculous. You could walk 10 minutes down Sunset Blvd and find 10 burgers as good as these. But ‘burger joints’ have become popular in Melbourne so more of you Urbanspooners can have authority on where to find the best burger.

Corey ( August 26, 2013 at 20:29 )

The one’s i’ve tried that are on your list are awesome

Corey ( August 26, 2013 at 20:32 )

I’ve tried the burgers at Parlour and Rockwell, and both were excellent. I reckon the burgers at the Beatbox Kitchen and the Merrywell are also very good (they must be if they’re in the top 5!). But, I still feel there are plenty of other options out there. I was actually looking for the top burgers in Melbourne, and came across a video that was done about finding the best burger in NYC – really interesting for those foodies out there: http://blog.deliveryhero.com.au/find-best-cheeseburger-city
I think someone should create something similar for Melbourne!

Chad Finner ( September 12, 2013 at 19:35 )

Best Burgers in Melbourne these days are found at Tree of us! Went there the first week of opening and have never had a better burger. Lets face it they’re just burgers!

Curt ( September 18, 2013 at 20:41 )

ANDREWS BEST SO FAR

arch ( October 15, 2013 at 08:58 )

merrywell is shit. wtf

Huxtaburger makes me sick every time I eat it, way to much sauce, an overwhelming amount! Why has no one mentioned Brother Burger? It is by far the best burger in Melbourne. It’s like eating a masterpiece. It’s like Huxta is Biggie Smalls, Brother B is John Lennon. Both good, but very different.

All these burgers are terribly small! what the heck happenned to a real burger! look at all these tiny ‘gourmet’(gourmet = silly stupid small expensive food excuse) silly excuses for a burger! why dont we all get real here! if you can eat a burger with 2 fingers it is NOT a burger!!!! you need to hold, caress, and be one with the burger! minimum 2 hands to hold a burger and good burgers require a spot from your burger buddy! LETS GET SERIOUS NOW!

well on the 31st of Dec I finally finished my run for the year leaving the merrywell till last.

and what a great burger it was,

not had a bad burger yet.

So from this list the 2 best were correct order in my books, beatbox and Merrywell were both excellent, if beatbox put bacon on I think it would be no1 but as is a close second.

looking forward to the next list so I can start working my way though a new list.

loudsx ( January 1, 2014 at 20:09 )

A good aussi burger should have bacon.

Anonymous ( January 5, 2014 at 10:46 )

Too many sweet buns on this list…

Dunstan ( January 17, 2014 at 11:41 )

I just had The Merrywell, it wasn’t that good, to be honest, the Mighty Melbourne from Grill’d is so much better.

Lerrrooooyoyyyy ( February 28, 2014 at 19:43 )

Man.. people have to get over this Andrews and Dannys burger thing. They are at this point in time VERY average and massively OVERATED. Go to Embassy Taxi Cafe in West Melb. Understated, daggy looking, super un cool, but the greatest burg youll ever have.

Anonymous ( May 3, 2014 at 17:45 )

Today, I went to the beach front with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed.
There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.

She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!
