Melbourne’s Top 10 – 2010

Top 10 – 2010
“This is what Melbourne has been waiting for all year long.
Herein lies a list of our best hometown burgers from 2010.”

ANDREWS HAMBURGERS – 144 BRIDPORT ST, ALBERT PARK
“A classic Melbourne icon. No Top 10 list would be complete without it.
Good double cheese. Good beef. Good burger.”

THE MILLSWYN – 131-133 DOMAIN RD, SOUTH YARRA
“You know a burger is good when it doesn’t even need cheese. The beef was
simply perfect and cooked with the right shade of pink.”

CAFE VUE – 401 ST KILDA RD, MELBOURNE
“Contrast to most other burgers, it is placid and relaxed. All of its flavours
melt in your mouth creating an all around excellent experience.”

ROCKPOOL BAR & GRILL – CROWN COMPLEX, SOUTHBANK
“This burger is all about the Wagyu beef pattie. Amazing Zuni pickles and peppery sautéed onions make for a really classy hamburger.”

THE LOCAL TAPHOUSE – 184 CARLISLE STREET, ST KILDA EAST
“This was honestly pretty special. All of the ingredients were of the finest quality. Such an elegantly creamy burger.”

BARNEY ALLEN’S – 14 FITZROY ST, ST KILDA
“This burger had one of the thickest patties we have ever seen. Even so, it was absolutely cooked to perfection.”

DANNY’S BURGERS – 360 ST GEORGES RD, FITZROY NORTH
“It starts off with a foursome of Butter, Egg, Mayo and Cheese, and continues to get even better and messier. Your ultimate 3am burger-fix.”

THE AMBEROOM AT ROYCE HOTEL – 379 ST KILDA RD, MELBOURNE
“Perfect ratios of quality beef, tomato sauce, mayo and an outstanding bun, teamed up to create a simple and unashamedly awesome burger.”

COLLINS KITCHEN AT GRAND HYATT – 123 COLLINS ST, MELBOURNE
“All the produce used is of an ultra high-quality, creating what can only be described as royalty amongst burgers.”

BEATBOX KITCHEN – LEVEL 7, 252 SWANSTON ST, MELBOURNE
“The time, research, energy and enthusiasm in all aspects of this burger have definitely paid off. All that’s left to say is… GOD DAAAMN!”

Not yet Michelle.
But we’ve heard good things.

Team Burger ( January 25, 2011 at 16:54 )

How can you not feature Andrews Hamburgers in Albert Park.. Without a doubt the best burgers in the land..

Worldly Sally ( January 25, 2011 at 22:27 )

Opps just realised it was there.. but only at 10? Are you kidding?!

Worldly Sally ( January 25, 2011 at 22:28 )

this is crap were you paid to list these places. much better burgers at some other venues

Anonymous ( January 26, 2011 at 03:38 )

    Hey Anonymous,
Thanks for the comment. As we do mention this is a list of our best hometown burgers.
If know of any awesome places we should check out, please do share and maybe they’ll even end up on next years list..

    Kind Regards.

    Team Burger ( January 26, 2011 at 16:37 )

Andrews is a better burger than Dannys, Kiwi fish and chips is better than Dannys. Don’t believe the hype! Look and the cross section of that burger patty in the photo, it’s in serious need of some seasoning!

The Silent Flea ( January 27, 2011 at 10:30 )

Barney Allen’s burgers are spectacular. It’s the relish.
Should’ve been No. 1.

Spange. ( January 27, 2011 at 11:09 )

This would have to be the best burger website ever!

Luke warm dinners ( January 30, 2011 at 12:15 )

So much burger bichin’ – well done to the entire 10 you are all worthy.

jamon ( February 1, 2011 at 05:41 )

You guys are super cool!

emmiegee ( February 2, 2011 at 00:08 )

You have to try the Yorkshire Burger at the Yorkshire Hotel, Hoddle Street, Abbotsford – thick patty, cheese, egg, bacon, onion, relish – delish

BB ( February 2, 2011 at 21:28 )

you shoudl deffinately check out URBAN BURGER.. their burgers r sensational and reasonably healthy too.. its a must try..

Sharon ( February 2, 2011 at 21:45 )

In my opinion the chips are an important part of the whole burger experience. The burgers all looked delicious, but what is the obsession with shoestring fries? They’re the worst kind.

Also, try the burgers at Dorothy’s in Armadale on 836 High Street

Dwain ( February 2, 2011 at 22:56 )

Urban Burger so over-rated… you can simply order their patties straight from their suppliers… and they ain’t all that with the over-sugared beef…

Off the beaten track- Dr Food Surf Shack Cape Woolomai…. no chips though…

Japie ( February 3, 2011 at 00:22 )

Crap list.

Any list which has Danny’s (ordinary burgers) over Andrew’s is to be disregarded.

Andrew’s at 10 is a joke.

Rockpool’s wagyu burger is definitely a case of style over substance.

Burger King ( February 3, 2011 at 08:31 )

Anyone who eats and rates burger places like urban burger and grill’d have no idea what they are talking about. They probably also think that Crust make great pizza.

The Silent Flea ( February 3, 2011 at 10:19 )

What a load of wank most of these places are!!

Anonymous ( February 3, 2011 at 11:24 )

Grill’d have the best burgers.

Anonymous ( February 3, 2011 at 11:26 )

Agreed, where is Grill’d on this list?? So many different burgers to choose from!!! And all as perfect as each other

Zoe ( February 3, 2011 at 15:06 )

Andrews over Danny’s anyday and my names Danny haha! Danny’s are poorly seasoned, bland, and the bread falls apart.

Andrews, well seasoned, awesome beef and some love and care, and woot it’s Feb so its reopened!!

Must try the other places for sure!

Danny ( February 3, 2011 at 17:41 )

Danny’s is a dubious choice but the rest of the list is quality, the fact you haven’t selected Grill’d (aka: cardboard “beef” blend, with a sauce to mask the lack of flavour) makes this list legitimate, rather than pandering to sheeple who wouldn’t know a good burger if it hit them in the face…..

BurgerLife ( February 3, 2011 at 18:10 )

I’m surprised Roozevelt’s hasn’t made the top 10. Definitely up there and highly recommended.

For a good ol’ fashioned, greasy traditional burger, it can’t be beaten

Its under the Sofitel at the Paris End of Collins.

Oooooohhh yeaaaaaahh.

BurgerMonkey ( February 3, 2011 at 19:28 )

Ohhh, and yes agreed, Grill’d is a cardboard burger that is so far from representing what a real burger should be. The same applies to Urban, Burger Edge and all the other try hard chains that are springing up.

BurgerMonkey ( February 3, 2011 at 19:30 )

If you want a burger that not only tastes good but isn’t a complete body killer you need to go to Grill’d.

You've got to be kidding ( February 3, 2011 at 20:52 )

Where is GRILL’D? DIVINE low fat stunning burgers…. it comes with all ingredients ON the burger and not beside it on some wooden tray to self assemble. Who came up with that tossy idea?

Burgers are not meant to be eaten at some high end hob nob tossy establishment.

I soooo cant wait to get to the USA and try a JUCY LUCY… Google it… better than the crap you have in your top 10!!

WE LOVE GRILL'D!!!! ( February 3, 2011 at 21:04 )

Could all the shills for Grill’d please move on. It’s embarrassing and you aren’t fooling anyone.

The Silent Flea ( February 5, 2011 at 22:44 )

There is a reason Grill’d are popping up everywhere… they are good.

Anonymous ( February 6, 2011 at 12:53 )

Oh right, that explains it. Thanks.

The Silent Flea ( February 7, 2011 at 10:50 )

You clearly prefer Maccas.

Anonymous ( February 7, 2011 at 21:55 )

Ooooh zing! Good burn. I walked straight in to that one!

The Silent Flea ( February 8, 2011 at 00:25 )

I love double Quarter Pounders!! At least they are fresh!! Might go have one now.

Anonymous ( February 9, 2011 at 12:55 )

It would be interesting to see how many people here ranting dog crap have actually tried some of the burgers on this list so they can form a proper opinion.

I love this list and alot of work would’ve gone into deciding where each one went.

It was so good to see the Raph burger come out on top because to me, I’ve been explaining to my friends everywhere that it really tastes like a home made burger made with absolute care and love.

Keep up the great work fellas.

Anonymous ( February 15, 2011 at 15:44 )

beatbox kitchen is boss!!!!!

p.s. I’d prefer a dirty burg at maccas over grill’d anyday!!

Bec ( February 15, 2011 at 22:12 )

My favourite thing about Grill’d is going in there and seeing how brown the Avocado has turned in those little tubs they have, oh and the herbs! Herbs in everything!

Skanky Momma ( February 23, 2011 at 17:54 )

YES!! Why so much herb?

Eat-O-Matic ( April 6, 2011 at 20:03 )

Love this website, great work guys! You need to chat to the lads at parma.com.au and get them to lift their game.

Waterside hotel does a good, albeit stock standard, burger – and avoid grove train like the plague.

Hojo ( April 14, 2011 at 17:46 )

Baden Burger at the Baden Powell Hotel Victoria Parade East Richmond as of yesterday is one of the best burgers I have had in melbourne.. and we went there because beatbox kitchen was closed!

Tooths ( May 5, 2011 at 17:21 )

Really enjoyed flicking through your website until I discovered your rating of Danny’s burgers. The hamburger Goddess herself, Stella (from the now defunct Caravan Cafe in Seymour – for those that are truly in the know) would be turning in her grave!

For shame! I can only assume Danny’s fund this site and that’s the reason for such a glowing review? I’ve given that place umpteenth chances and it has failed miserably every time.

Grow some balls guys!

George ( May 5, 2011 at 17:47 )

I’ve only tried 3 of the burgers on that list… but the sheer fact that the Cafe Vue burger features is a travesty… That burger is atrocious and should in fact be called a tiny meat sandwich, because far to small, tasteless and just generally insignificant to ever be classified as a burger.

As for Andrew’s. To put that burger at #10 seems like you’re simply doing it lip service. This isn’t just a good burger, it is a phenomenal burger… it’s a religious experience.

And finally, to all the urban burger, grill’d (I’m so bloody trendy I can pop an apostrophe in my name and become a h’p burg’r cha’n), burger edge spruikers…

Your not doing your business any favours. a) your burgers taste like cardboard. b) they look like cardboard. c) They are about as healthy as chewing on cardboard, hence the low fat aspect and d) your attempt to employ weird and awkwardly hipster staff in your stores does nothing for your image. Your burgers are not cool.

Anonymous ( May 15, 2011 at 12:17 )

All I have to say is Buxton burger…if you’ve been there you’ll know what I’m going on about.

Matt ( May 26, 2011 at 09:23 )

@Anomymous, I totes agree with you on all counts. I’ve given the Vue burger a number of tries and it’s always disapointing, never really tastes fresh, more like it was cooked a couple of hours ago and been under the heatlamp. Pretty disapointing.

Anonymouse ( May 27, 2011 at 15:39 )

Hey guys. I’m doing your top 10 list with a group of guys from work, in order. So far we’ve only had the first two, and we all thought The Millswyn burger was outrageously good! Finding it hard to believe that there can be 8 burgers better than it to be honest. We’re off to Cafe Vue on Monday, and we’re all looking forward to the Rockpool burger after that, we’ve all had that a few times before.

Keep up the great work!

Daryl ( July 14, 2011 at 10:01 )

Cheers Daryl. You and your noble burger crew are in for an awesome ride. Keep us posted with how you go yeah!?

The Burger Adventure ( July 14, 2011 at 11:28 )

The Burger DeLuxe from the Hamburger Bar at Beer DeLuxe (Federation Square) is one of the tastiest burgers around!

Burger Boy ( August 15, 2011 at 13:53 )

Hey BurgerMonkey

If Roosevelt Burger is still as good as it was in 98 then yes it should be in the top 10 its as good or better than Andrews in Albert Park

Big Bad Burger Buster ( September 9, 2011 at 19:43 )

Two to go on the list gents, and it’s been a great ride, but definitely one that’s gone up and down. We’re keeping track as we go and will let you know the order according to our group. Fair to say there’s been some cracking burgers though!

I’m actually confused by the order you’ve chosen, particularly with Rockpool being at number 7 when you’ve given it the rating ‘Go Now’, while numbers 6 through to 3 are only ‘Definitely’, which is not as good by your own rating system…?

Daryl ( October 4, 2011 at 16:29 )

Thats awesome to hear dude. Big up to you and your crew once again. So lets ease that confusion…
The only time we give a “GO NOW!” is when we all agree that the burger is absolutely a “GO NOW!”. For example, say B, G & Z say “GO NOW!” and D says “Definitely”, the burger will still only get the status of “Definitely” recommended. We don’t mess around here at tBA; it’s got to be unanimous. So in late 2010 we each voted for our personal best. We gave 10 points to our favourite (what we each considered Burger of the Year), and then went down to 1 point for the number 10. Then we tallied the results.
    Hope that helps Daryl.

Shoot us an email at hello@theburgeradventure.com if anything mate.

Enjoy the rest of your Adventure!

    The Burger Adventure ( October 4, 2011 at 20:25 )

The journey is complete and it’s fair to say we’ve created some burger addicts around the office. FYI – Top 10 rated in this order amongst our group of 8-10.

1. Rockpool
2. Collins Kitchen
3. The Millswyn
4. Barney Allen’s
4. BeatBox Kitchen
6. Andrew’s Hamburgers
7. Cafe Vue
8. Amberoom at Royce Hotel
9. The Local Taphouse
10. Danny’s Burgers

We all agreed that the top 3 there are in a different echelon, and Rockpool still beats the other two with relative ease. Barney Allen’s and BBK had equal scores with Andrew’s not far behind, each of them a different style that was well executed with quality fresh ingredients. Cafe Vue had a nice creamy pattie and was enjoyable to eat, but the miniature size really cost it better marks. Amberoom was a similar story for size but then it also lacked any real punch of flavour. The Local Taphouse and Danny’s we would actually prefer to have never eaten, enough said.

It was a great ride guys and we thank you for the hard work and research that went it to providing us with this list. We look forward to seeing the top 10 of 2011 in a month or two 😉

Daryl ( December 8, 2011 at 15:52 )

    Daryl,
Straight up, from our crew to yours … Thats frkn awesome!

Looking forward to taking you guys on a whole new journey in 2012.

    Cheers mate

    The Burger Adventure ( December 15, 2011 at 22:39 )

This list is better than others I’ve seen.

All in the list are worthy of the top 10. Grill’d is awesome, and while the might melbourne is one of my most favourite eats, I agree that you can’t include a burger chain in a list of the best of Melbourne. Urban Burger is garbage and obviously fake posts!

Rockpool is definitely my number 1 though, nothing beats that combination of flavours.

Jules ( January 8, 2012 at 23:10 )

at the risk of an influx of business and customers to this compact kitchen leading to a longer waiting line for me…check out souperburger in st kilda. melbourne’s best kept secret.

scott ( January 17, 2012 at 15:41 )

You guys need to get out of the inner suburbs. Good burgers to be had on the fringe of Melbourne!

Dale ( January 19, 2012 at 16:35 )

Who goes to Rock Pool for Burgers? What a bunch of private school wankers. Lucky the Beatbox Kitchen drove close enough to your side of the Yarra.

ps – everyone in the North know that Danny’s Burgers are shit house too. Some 20 odd years ago, I expect they were rad – but now they get by purely on hype. A really disapointing showing guys. Its embarrassing that you claim to represent Melbourne.

You need to make it clear that this is more of a specific area and opinion. Melbourne has great burgers, but with the exception of Beat Box none of them are on this list.

Edinborough Castle, Jims Fish & Chips in Northcote, The ‘Bogan Burger’ at the Napier, Huxta Burger, Kodiak Club (this burgers getting written up everywhere) and even Misty’s Diner.

Great looking website, shame about the content.

Winnie ( January 30, 2012 at 10:50 )

C’mon Winnie, that rant is totally unneccesary. Huxta Burger (which is a phenomenal burger so no arguments there) didn’t exist in 2010 to have possibly been in consideration on this list, the ‘Bogan Burger’ doesn’t actually contain a beef pattie and so in my mind isn’t a hamburger at all, and Misty’s Diner is really poor quality ingredients slapped together with some flavoursome sauce to try and cover it up.
Maybe try some of the burgers on the list to broaden your horizons. Rockpool is a truly amazing burger, and while you may consider it to be a wanky establishment that doesn’t change the quality and flavour of that wagyu meat that no other pattie comes close to.
Another one to definitely try is Nshry in Albert Park, I’ve never had a burger anything like their Japanese inspired marvel.
It’s also worth pointing out that these guys have always presented their reviews as their own opinion and don’t claim to be the authority on all things burger.

Daryl ( January 31, 2012 at 09:35 )

Theres a little takeaway in moorabbin.
Vic wickam rd near the mitre 10 best
Burger with the lot around. Run by avry help
Asian. Get it made fresh. You eat the whole
Damn thing and it wont drop out the back

ticolawson@yahoo.com ( February 4, 2012 at 12:00 )

Nice list. A few disagreements, but like you said its your list not mine 😀
The people touting Grill’d need to get out more. They are about on par with McDonalds in my opinion.

Rachael ( February 10, 2012 at 20:12 )

I agree with alot of people on here, your list is crap and so are most of your reviews. I’m a chef by trade and you clearly have no idea guys, sorry to say these negative things, I’m not simply having a go at you, but you bag out things in some places that you racer about else where. I always see you rave about Danny’s rolls and they are the same as alot of other places you say you hate the rolls at. I’m also over the wanked up burgers getting so much attention, I think they need a different site or category. I feel when doing burgers people want burgers not fine dining over priced wagu mince in a roll!
Also noticing alot of very wrong comments. I read your reviews, then check out the place and what you state is simply incorrect!

Tex ( May 3, 2012 at 17:36 )

Why does nobody know about Farmers Fine Foods $10 lunch burger. Destroys a burger from Andrews. In fact, I’m about to go buy some chips from Andrews and burger from Farmers Fine Foods. A well hidden gem of the burger scene in Melbourne.
